The Government is earning public acclamation for bringing down the prices of essential commodities.
The Government with effect from midnight yesterday ordered a price control on several essential commodities in view of the forthcoming festive season.
Minister Bandula Gunawardena said retail prices at the CWE outlets from Thursday morning will be 84 rupees for a kilo sugar, dhal 149 rupees, big onions 74 rupees, red onions 86 rupees, potatoes 74 rupees, chillies 225 rupees and garlic 230 rupees. A 400 gram pack of milk powder will cost 225 rupees while canned fish will be 149 rupees and a kilo of Basmathi rice will cost 90 rupees.
Accordingly, the price of a kilo of sugar has come down by 26 rupees, dhal by 91 rupees and big onions and potatoes by 46 rupees. The price of red onions is down by 34 rupees, dried chillies by 15 rupees and garlic by 120 rupees. Prices of milk foods have declined by 20 rupees.
Consumers point out that the price reduction of essential commodities by such a large margin in view of the Christmas and New Year Season is of much relief to them..
