"Goddamn it, Becca," Nick said quietly, wincing as I cuddled my face against his chest. "I hate you."
I stared up at him, appalled.
"What?" My mouth dropped open. "Why?" I hadn't realized that he was only being sarcastic.
Nick laughed bitterly and shook his head.
"I can't end my relationship with you after you tell me that you love me..." he mumbled. "I just can't. Why'd you have to say that?"
I giggled darkly and wrapped my arms around Nick, embracing him in a hug that was based at his waist.
"I said it because I meant it. I think I love you, Nick," I promised.
Nick let out a little groan. It was a noise I knew well. A tortured noise, full of anguish, yet his was sprinkled with a slight edge of passion, which made me feel less guilty about dropping the "I love you" bomb on him during the worst possible moment.
"Dammit, Becca, I love you too," he croaked. Before I realized it, he was crying. I noticed hot tears dripping down his face and rolling off his body, and I felt them splashing against my cheeks. Soon enough, my own droplets of sadness tangoed with his, and we were both standing there, blubbering.
Our sobs lasted for twenty minutes or so, before I took it upon myself to end it, prying my arms off Nick's waist and smiling at him.
"Let's get out of here," I murmured. "We've got to get to work or Kevin will become even more suspicious."
I shuddered at the thought of Kevin pursuing us any further, and Nick mimicked my flinch.
"Good idea," he compliment, leading me out of the cover of the trees. "Listen, while we're working-" he paused, lowering his tone as fellow slaves came into earshot, -"don't hang around me. Be independent, and tonight I'll make up for it." He smiled at me, looking vaguely seductive, and I slapped him playfully on the shoulder before we were forced to part our separate ways for the day.

[Joe's POV]

I sat on the steps of the porch, dreamily staring into the sky. I had only one thing on my mind, and that was Eliza. Dammit, that girl drove me crazy. She made me feel things I'd never felt before, and I couldn't understand it.
"Joe!"
Abruptly, I snapped out of my fantasies as I heard my brother calling to me.
"Yes, Kevin?" I replied.
"We've got a problem," he huffed, taking a seat next to me. He was noticeably angered, so I chose my words carefully.
"Oh." At this point, I was only pretending to be interested. "What's the matter?"
"Nick's the matter, that's what," my brother growled. "He's got a girlfriend. I don't know who it is, but I've got my suspicions." He hesitated for a moment. "Remember that girl...? What was her name?"
I raised my dark eyebrows and thought about it for a moment.
"Rebecca?...Er, Becca, I mean. The short, childish-looking girl?" I described.
Kevin smiled sinisterly at me and nodded his head.
"That's her, all right. She's definitely the girl Nick's having a relationship with.... Damn. Remember, he kept sticking up for her a couple of weeks ago?"
I bit my lip, and a little flicker of memory rushed into my head. I'd tried to rape Becca, yes, but who had stopped me...? Could it possibly have been Nick? Angrily, I clenched my hands into fists. Even the possibility that Nick had attacked me made me furious.
"I agree, I think it's her," I said. "But you don't have any proof."
Kevin hesitated, thinking for a moment. I could tell by the expression on his face that he was devising a plan. I copied his "look", making it seem like I was also focused on that topic. But in reality, my mind was still stuck on Eliza....
Kevin grinned, still sinisterly, and held his hand out after a few short minutes of thought. I stared at him, puzzled, and he spoke to ease my confusion.
"I've got an idea. Mind getting me some paper and a quill, please?"
