Richard Lobb - National Chicken Council
We can grow chickens twice as big in half the time but their bones and internal organs can't keep up the the rapid growth. They can't walk, and they get sick easier, so antibiotics are put in their feed. Even sick chickens go to the plant for processing. The farmers end up as slaves to the corporations which insist on barn upgrades. Farmers typically borrow over half a million to start off, and make about $18,000/year for their efforts.
Michael Pollan - Omnivore's Dilemma
We have an illusion of diversity, but only a few companies and only a few products are produced. A huge number of products are filled with corn. Corn is subsidized by the government, so producers find ways to get it into everything to make food cheaper. It's a commodity crop because it can be stored and engineered.
Larry Johnson - Center for Crop Utilization Research
High-fructose corn syrup and soya is in 90% of products including feed for cows, pigs, chickens and fish. Cheap corn means cheap feed and cheap meat. But it also means a sub-standard product.
CAFO - Concentrated Animal Feed Operation
Cows shouldn't be eating corn. They should eat grass. I wrote about that a bit more here in which it's suggested that eating grass-fed cows can even help you lose weight. High corn diets in cows lead to e-coli that are antibiotic resistant. Cows stand in manure all day, and the manure gets in the meat.

The food-disparagement statutes in the 13 states represent "a legislative attempt to insulate an economic sector from criticism." David J. Bederman et al, 34 Harv. J. Leg. 135, 168 (1997). In Colorado, such insulation comes by way of a criminal law (Colo. Rev. Stat. Ann. §35-31-101) designed to punish those citizen-activists guilty of mouthing falsehoods about farm products. Imagine what any of these laws, let alone the Colorado one, could mean to those who distribute food safety newsletters in these states or who post food criticisms on the Internet.

Here are some real examples. A landfill owner sued a Texas woman for $5 million for calling his operation a dump. An incinerator builder sued a high school teacher in Missouri for $6.6 million for writing an anti-incinerator letter to the editor. Canada's two huge logging companies, MacMillan Bloedel and Fletcher Challenge have sued hundreds of citizens, communities and environmental groups for saying bad things about clearcutting. Monsanto, maker of genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (BGH), sued several small Midwest dairies for advertising that their milk is BGH-free. McDonalds sued two British activists for putting out a pamphlet claiming that Big Macs are unhealthy and harmful to the environment.

Now, as a grower I have to say that I do want protection against some rival at the farmers' market spreading unfounded rumors that my carrots aren't really organic. And as a writer, I think it's good that people can sue me if I publish false information that hurts them. But we already have means to protect ourselves against such problems. We don't need new laws that can be used by organizations with deep pockets and the ability to deduct legal expenses as a cost of doing business to intimidate individuals or organizations that voice legitimate concerns.
StrangeGlobal: PM me about it and let's change the world :)
Chris16T20: Fantastic video Strange, you never fail to spark intense interest in whatever you talk about, great to see you back.
Kyodee171: Sent! :)
KrisMTL: Eat raw and local imo.
mpalssonur: Can you point out to me a single instance where genetic engeneering has caused harm?
kriswager: Vogter, are we Danes even allowed to like Swedes?
kriswager: Aren't we too many people from the Nordic countries on the internet for any of them to be really secret? Think it would be better to speak one of the Papua New Guinea languages, which is only spoken within the tribes
StrangeGlobal: Well I could have been serious, or I could just have been joking. I've recently been getting odd language comments and have realized that the mac-translation programs ain't bad at all! Bring on the tribal tongue!
kriswager: Google translation is also fairly good. Though, I think neither google nor the mac translation programs will work on tribal tongues. Am currently working on a project in Malmö, and I find that a machine speech translator could be really useful.
Vogter2100: Some of them, those that dont pass out drunk in our streets LOL
TheSpankymonkey: "Bring on the tribal tongue!"??? How cool, let's rock. baboobbooobbaa baaa booooo shackkkkaaaa lackkkkaaaaa mooo mooo mooo look at me i'm a chicken mooo moooo moo bomba boombi bombia babbbaaaaaa ;-)
jbguy: A 10:36 regurgitation of the documentary Food Inc. All of the statistics used are straight from the movie.
StrangeGlobal: Great movie isn't it? Or what are you saying? Oh wait... you mean stats can't be repeated? Or did you assume I didn't do any fact checking on my own?
StrangeGlobal: That's hilarious. The same perception of Danes floats around in Sweden :D I guess assholes just travel.
Vogter2100: Yeah.. you are so right :) Im on blogtv from 11 om our time. If you want to try and be cohost .. come by ;-)
jbguy: It is a great movie, very informative. Im just saying that it seems to your viewers that you are a radical free thinker when all you have done is repeat a documentary. You should probably give credit to those who did the real research and not claim these ideas to be the result of your own fact checking and discovery. Im not saying you are wrong, Im just saying that any college professor would penalize you for plagiarism had this been a term paper. Just give credit where credit is due.
StrangeGlobal: Are you kidding? Did you even check the description box? I'm talking about legislation - the debate has been around for a while, I hardly think bringing it up constitutes plagiarism. It took me a long time to get this thing together.
jbguy: I did check the description box and I noticed that Food Inc. is not mentioned. You are practically taking quotes from the movie verbatim.
jbguy: You: "and the corporations don't worry about the comfort of their workers either, because they are temporary, just like the animals." The movie: "They have the same mentality towards the workers as they do the hogs. You know the hog, they don't really have to worry about their comfort because they are temporary, they're going to be killed, and they have the same viewpoint to the worker. They're not worried about the longevity of the worker cause to them, everything has an end."
jbguy: You: "the government cracks down on the workers, but never the company that hires them. They get rid of 15 workers a day and a deal with immigration." The movie: "for years the government turned a blind eye to the meat packing industries recruitment of immigrant workers, but now when there is an anti immigrant movement, they're cracking down all of the sudden, but they're not cracking down on the companies, the government is cracking down on the workers."
jbguy: In another part of the movie just after that. "Immigration officials are arresting Smithfield workers at this trailer park. This is an agreement between Smithfield and immigration authorities. They get rid of 15 workers per day but you don't see any massive raids. That way it doesn't affect the production line." I wish there wasn't a character limit because I could give more examples. However, I think it is obvious that these ideas are not your own.
StrangeGlobal: Of course they're not my own, this isn't personal philosophy, this is a collection of widespread ideas, I've collected them and put them together. Food Inc got their stats from a source - the movie itself is not a source and I am not quoting the movie. The stats are fact - I did do the research to back it up.
bubba007ss: They are also putting our farmers out of business and transporting our produce from over seas so it is about to get worse and just think the democrats are in office and we still have businesses moving over seas and they all turning their heads as not to notice SO AMERICA do it the democratic way turn your heads and buy all your produce from over seas then our our farmers will not be the blame any more
2007omi: Not only do you need to know how your food is grown, produced, what pesticides are sprayed on them, how it's handled at the warehouse/slaughterhouse and distribution, but you need to read all of the ingredients on the label. If you don't know what a word means, there is a great chance of it producing cancer or a disease in your body, especially high frictose corn syrup.
nataliemiklosik: The government cracks down with workers, but never on the company that hires them? Not true. Otherwise, good video.
