What started as a call about a possible assault ended with officers opening fire on a charging pit bull.

Police say the 911 call came in at around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night of a possible assault in an apartment at 1st Avenue near 93rd Street on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

When an NYPD sergeant and five officers arrived to apartment 11J, police say they rang the doorbell. A door opened wide enough, according to reports, for a pit bull to race out. Three of the officers opened fire on the animal, with the bullets ricocheting off the walls in the hallway.

One officer from the Midtown North Task Force was struck by a bullet fragment under his right eye. Another fragment hit the hand of a second officer. An officer from the 19th Precinct was hit on the side of the nose. The woman who opened the door was hit in the arm, and the dog died in the shooting.

Police arrested the unidentified woman. Five other people were found in the apartment. But no gun was found.

"I heard about five loud shots," said neighbor Dan Kremer. "I live on the 21st floor so I could hear it from the top of the building. All of a sudden I see cop cars and ambulances coming down below. It's one of the perils of living in New York, but what are you going to do?"

"It's a public housing building," said neighbor Rose Dinzey. "Things happen. I've been living here for 15 years, but nothing happens like this."

Were proper police procedures followed? That's the question still unanswered. Police are still questioning the five suspects at the 19th Precinct. The three officers and woman who were hit by fragments were treated and released. No charges have been filed.
