Ride on the "Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway of Valor" NY SR 38 Video

In July 2009 New York Gov. Patterson signed into law - for the first and only time in
New York State - a state highway dedicated to the men and women who served
in Vietnam. New York State Route 38 will now be designated as the Vietnam
Veterans Memorial Highway of Valor.

I took 2 rides on Rte 38. This ride on the northern part to Sterling, NY and a 2nd ride on the southern part to Dryden, NY.

The song "Fortunate Son" by CCR was done around 1968-1969 and was about "fortunate sons" who, because of being rich and/or connected, didn't get drafted while blue collar guys did.

Galveston was written in about 1966 by Jimmy Webb, while in Vietnam, and thinking about what he had left behind and might never see again..Galveston, TX

KeukaRyder: It's the smallest of the great lakes approx 200 miles by 55 miles and max 224 feet deep. I have body surfed on Ontario. Wicked rough when I did it though. Fun Fact: Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes and is just a fifth the size of the Caspian Sea. Thanks for watching!

KeukaRyder: Thanks for watching! Yeah, Glen has a great voice and can play. Song is about a guy (Jimmy Webb) thinking about his girl and Galveston while in Vietnam under fire. (Um, that's what I've always heard anyway. That goes back a long time)

TempFix: Wow I can't believe you ran into a train. I rarely see them, if ever! Does your scoot have a radio on board? I don't remember you saying anything about it but I am curious, are you a vet?

KeukaRyder: no radio. But, I just got a sony mp3 ic recorder. It records 271 hours. So, I'm gonna put some stuff on that. No, not a vet. I almost was but my draft number was high. I sweated that out for a while. I had a meetup with MrBKBiker. He is a vet. We got to talking about what it was like back then and I felt like it was time for me to do just a little something to honor them. So, I rode up Route 38 to Sterling and then down Rte 38 from Auburn to Dryden. It was a way different world back then.

KeukaRyder: Cool. I always liked CCR too. I picked CCR because Fogarty had been to Vietnam and came back ticked off because only poor guys (white and black) were being sent over. THe rich kids or connected kids got a pass.

lauriejennifer: Yeah, war is all politics like that... CCR makes great riding music, too. Green River is (was) often on my iPod... but my ipod bit the dust on my last road trip. It came unclipped from my tank bag and is now in pieces on the bridge over the Mississippi River on I-80.
