The Huge Mistake: Why cap and trade would be bad for the environment and the economy Video
This video, produced by EPA enforcement attorneys speaking on their own personal behalf, explains why cap-and-trade, while applicable for acid rain, will not work for climate change. It explains why a fee-and-dividend approach is more appropriate and will benefit the environment and the economy. Economists call this the "double dividend."
The video is divided into three sections.
1. The Big Lie which is that cap-and-trade will work for climate change. The reality is that cap-and-trade works great for acid rain, but would not work for climate change.
2. The Big Rip-Off which discusses how carbon offsets make things even worse because they can be easily gamed and because all the money will flow to the cheapest offsets.
3. The real solution which discusses fee-and-rebate which provides a double benefit, helping both the environment and economy.

nevaseenamancry: Would carbon fees with rebates really work? In this video are they saying that by gradually raising the cost of fossil fuels that we will someday see cheaper green energy? That doesn't sound right. If someone could clarify this I'd appreciate it.

These people in the video know carbon fees with rebates will not work.The Cap and Trade system is insane.The EU ETS that they reference was and is a complete disaster.Phase I failed and Phase II is about to collapse.Charging industry for carbon use is not going to work. the EU tried that in Eastern Europe and it was a disaster.Much better to let industry continue working with no fees so long as they invest in future clean energy R&D.
StrikeEagel007: They think that by increasing the taxes on fossil fuels that the energy companies will be able to use the surplus profits to invest in clean energy.Nice idea.But not going to happen.There is no incentive for this to work.Example: Exxon would not care less to develop clean energy if they can sell oil at the highest price per barrel. The manufacturing companies should invest in clean energy and get a tax break if they meet certain criteria.These lawyers are trying to get set up for the contracts.
nevaseenamancry: That makes sense. Good point. I watched a documentary about electric cars and there was a battery that would last 300 miles. Guess what happened? An oil company bought it. (The cars were leased to people, taken back and destroyed.)

nevaseenamancry: I have to admit I had to look up what EU ETS meant. I knew what EU was but not ETS. So.. this Cap and Trade stuff is bigger than I thought. I heard on the radio if you leave your car idling while in traffic, some cities can fine you. Everybody is freaking out about emissions.

When I worked in Germany in the late 90s, on a military base, our introduction to Germany was a German coming up and banging on our rental car that my wife was sitting in wating for me (it happened to be about 20 deg F outside!) and yelling at my wife to "turn off the car". They were easily deceived by Hitler, and the saga continues to this day. They can't seem to think for themselves... poor poor Europeans! Let's not go down that same route!!

As for the evilness of the tobacco industry, hmmm. How much of those huge settlements went to the community and how much to the lawyers?
