Tempests - Would You Believe
This Charlotte, NC-based group was originally formed by John Roger Branch and became successful early on as a back-up group for Jerry Butler, James & Bobby Purify, The Tams, and even Stevie Wonder. They found a good lead vocalist in Hazel Martin and recorded "Would You Believe" in 1967 that was a great regional hit, but whatever magic is necessary to put a group over the top never quite developed for The Tempests. They followed later with "Long Live Our Love" which also wasn't a hit nationally, but it sounded great to the shaggers.
