It's All In The Game - Tommy Edwards (MGM) 1958. Melody in A Major Dawes, a Chicago bank president and amateur pianist and flautist, composed the tune in 1911 in a single sitting at his lakeshore home in Evanston. He played it for a friend, the violinist Francis macmillen, who took Dawes's sheet music to a publisher. Dawes, known for his federal appointments and a United States Senate candidacy, was surprised to find a portrait of himself in a State Street shop window with copies of the tune for sale. Dawes quipped, "I know that I will be the target of my punster friends. They will say that if all the notes in my bank are as bad as my musical ones, they are not worth the paper they were written on." The tune, often dubbed "Dawes's Melody," followed him into politics, and he grew to detest hearing it wherever he appeared. 'HACKED' is a series of 8 rhythmic video sketches where I 'hack' to the pieces from my first album 'A Strange Year, Maybe' using a pair of sticks and a drumpad. Recently I have been inspired to further layer/expand these original pieces. Background: When I'm creating music I begin with an inspired emotion, find an instrument and begin to improvise that emotion. After I find a melody, a riff, or a sound I like, I begin a 'hack' in order to find the inner polyrhythms and then decide which instruments best express both the emotion and the rhythm. 'HACKED' is aa raw display of this process--finding these rhythms. It is filmed out of a studio apartment in Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico/February 2010. Note: Hacking is a term I learned while studying music in Kentucky at Calloway County High School. Other works of Lyman have been more accessible, allowing the Oahu native to be rediscovered by a generation of fans most likely not born when they were first released on vinyl. CD pressings of the albums Legend of Pelé , Taboo and Taboo 2 receive the bulk of notoriety, but this 1959 offering shows the band leader and marimba player at a sonically wonderful moment in his career. Bahia, a follow-up to his hugely successful Pelé (1958), was recorded at the Kaiser Aluminum Dome on a unique three track stereophonic system. All track were done after midnight to minimize traffic noise and in one take: no over-dubbing! Here we've got a nice, booming arrange of Girls' Sealing Club. If all goes according to plan, it won't be the only arrange of this song that I share this month. Jun.A shares his ability to make a commanding presence out of a song once more, as is per usual of him. The album comes from Reitaisai 7, but I pulled this track by itself off of a certain other site. The album seems promising though, with a lot of obscure arranges. I'ma keep my eyes and ears out for it, and probably share more from it when I finally nab the rest of the tracks. In regards to imagery - I really wish I could find a more appropriate image, bleh.
