The NEW YORK served as the flagship of Admiral Sampson of the combined "North Atlantic Squadron" and "Flying Squadron", which joined to locate and destroy the Spanish naval force in the Caribbean. NEW YORK took part in the bombardment of San Juan, Puerto Rico on May 12, 1898.
