Phronima (pram bug amphipod) are some of the weirdest zooplankton I have seen. We caught several of these during a recent research cruise off Australia on board the RV Kilo Moana (March 2007). The amphipod (the crustacean or shrimp-like animal) parasitizes an appendicularian (salp), and then eats the salp's body, leaving only the outside gelatinous house. The Phronima amphipod then lives in the house at depths of around 500 - 2000 m in the ocean, where it is a voracious predator. This bug ...
