22-23 February 1998 -- Central Florida Tornado Outbreak

This loop of hourly GOES-8 InfraRed imagery shows the eastward progression of the intense squall line across the Gulf of Mexico and northern/central Florida. Colder cloud top temperatures are color-enhanced (magenta = -20 C, green = -40 C, yellow = -60 C, black = -80 C). At 6-hour intervals the ETA model 500 hPa height (cyan) and vorticity (red) contours are overlaid on the images.

An excellent combined visible/infra-red satellite loop of the lifecycle of Hurricane Katrina from 0015z 08/26/05 through 1545z 08/29/05. The loop starts with Katrina making landfall at Miami, Florida as a Category One, then moving west-southwest into the Gulf of Mexico, strengthening to Category Five instensity and finally weakening to a Category Three before crossing extreme Southeast Louisiana and making a final landfall on the Gulf coast at the Louisiana/Mississippi border....

Hurricane Rita - Visible/Infra-Red Satellite Loop

An excellent visible/infra-red satellite loop of the lifecycle of Hurricane Rita from 1015z 09/20/05 through 1645z 09/24/05. The system enters the Florida Straits as a Tropical Storm and rapidly intensifies reaching Category Two intensity south of Key West and then Category Five intensity the next day. Over the following two days, the hurricane crosses the northern Gulf of Mexico and makes landfall on the Texas/Louisiana border as a Category Three.
