Kepler Spies Changing Phases On Planet HAT-P-7

Kepler Spies Changing Phases On Planet HAT-P-7

NASA's new exoplanet-hunting Kepler space telescope has detected the atmosphere of a known giant gas planet, demonstrating the telescope's extraordinary scientific capabilities. The observations were collected from a planet called HAT-P-7, known to transit a star located about 1000 light years from Earth. The planet orbits the star in just 2.2 days and is 26 times closer than Earth is to the sun. Its orbit, combined with a mass somewhat larger than the planet Jupiter, classifies this planet as ...

"Hot Jupiters" - A Type Of Extrasolar Planet

Most of the 400 plus planets that have been detected so far are gas giants. The first extra-solar planet detected around a star similar to the Sun was 51 Peg. It has about the mass of Jupiter. But unlike Jupiter, which is five times as far from the Sun as Earth and orbits the Sun in 12 years, 51 Peg is twenty times closer to its star than Earth is to the Sun and orbits its star every 4 days. Planets like these are referred to as "Hot Jupiters. Credit: Sara Seager

Direct Imaging of Exoplanets with Adaptive Optics, Coronagraphy, and Differential Imaging

Direct Imaging of Exoplanets with Adaptive Optics, Coronagraphy, and Differential Imaging

Not a povray animation, but it shows the interesting aspects of trying to image an extrasolar planet from the ground: Atmospheric turbulence is corrected by so-called adaptive optics on modern telescopes. The animation shows a "normal" observation on the left, seeing correctd by standard, contemporary AO systems in the center, and a correction as it is expected from the next generation of "extreme" AO systems. The top row shows the instantaneous image an astronomer would get to see through ...

per day. VLT contributes greatly to making ESO the most productive ground-based observatory in the world. The VLT has stimulated a new age of discoveries, with several notable scientific firsts, including the first image of an extrasolar planet (ESO 42/08), tracking individual stars moving around the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way (ESO 46/08), and observing the afterglow of the furthest known Gamma-Ray Burst. Although the four 8.2-metre Unit Telescopes can be ...

Gliese 581 C an extrasolar planet

"Gliese 581 c or Gl 581 c is an extrasolar planet orbiting the red dwarf star Gliese 581. With a mass at least 5.36 times that of the Earth, it is classified as a super-Earth, a category which incorporates planets exceeding the mass of Earth but smaller than 10 Earth masses, it was the smallest known extrasolar planet around a main sequence star, but on April 21, 2009, another planet orbiting Gliese 581, Gliese 581 e, was announced with an approximate mass of 1.9 earth masses, which is now ...

Methuselah extrasolar planet or officially B1620-26 b

"Methuselah is the only planet to have received a biblical name, although two additional extrasolar planets have been given mythological names (just like in the solar system), those planets being Bellerophon and Osiris. It is much more likely that Methuselah formed in orbit around the star that has now evolved into the white dwarf, and that the star and planet were only later captured into orbit around the neutron star. Stellar encounters are not very common in the disk of the Milky Way ...
