I like playing songs that teach people something. Although the educational properties of this song are somewhat dubious as even John Darnielle admits the song is actually about the Picts, but that wasn't as musical. Once again, no luck in finding the original version on youtube.

With deep apologies to Mr. Darnielle and Mr. The Boss. Sawngs: Grimmauld Place (Thunder Road, Bruce Springsteen) Going to Hogwarts (Going to Georgia, The Mountain Goats) the "yule ball gown" line marks a distict giving up on trying to come up with clever lyrics there's totally a line in one of the books (can't remember which) where it says some kids are feeding the giant squid toast almost 8 minutes long, and 6 minutes in I say the words, "I feel like this was, like, the dumbest thing ever." twittah: @saynotocancer

Video #3 my fist cover. Hope everybody enjoys it. Lyrics (with credit to John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats): We live high our love gorges on the alcohol we feed it and it grows all fat and friendly we have surplus if we need it we hold on as hard as we can our knuckles are white We write letters to each other invent secrets to confess to i learn foreign and exotic terms of endearment by which to adress you we feed fresh fruit to one another we stay up all night and I am healthy, I am whole, but I have poor impulse control and I want to go home, But I am home. We are strong we are faithful, we are guardians of a rare thing we pay close and careful attention to the news the morning air brings we show great loyalty to the hard times we've been through we are filled with riches and wonders our love keeps the things it finds and we dance like drunken sailors lost at sea and out of our minds you find shelter somewhere in me I find great comfort in you and I keep you safe from harm you...

From one of the 1990s most overlooked indie bands, originally released in July 1993 as part of the Simple Machines Working Holiday series, it is also compiled on the band's Emotional Discipline album (1997). franklin bruno (known for sometimes being a mountain goat and otherwise assisting John Darnielle with small dollops of his transcendence) has written some great lyrics, and here they are for this tune, with a few question marks: its easy to agree with the man and the mitre (mitre=name for bishop's hat) when you haven't got a daughter with another one inside her its easy to insist that the method be Rhythm when your only son is carrying a metronome within him he'll do the honorable thing quivering by your side and the last thing this family needs is another child and another child bride he shows up at her window and she shimmies down the ladder when she get back to her room, she's no wiser but she's sadder when saint and the serpent prepare themselves to grapple its starts out in...
