On December 23rd, the Center rescued a California sea lion that stranded near the Oakland International Airport and received quite a bit of media attention amid the holiday rush. "Saps", a 210 lb. subadult male, was brought back to the Center's hospital to be checked out by the vet staff. The animal appeared alert and did not seem to be injured, and he did not seem pleased with his confinement, so after getting a checkup and a flipper tag, veterinarians decided the best course of action would be to release him as soon as possible rather than expose him to further stress. As the Center's staff prepared to go home for their holidays on Christmas Eve, they got a late afternoon call that Saps would be released out on Rodeo Beach in front of the Center's facility. So everyone bundled up and braved the stormy weather to bid "Saps" farewell and send him home for the holidays too, back to his ocean home. To learn more, read...
