TOP OF THE WORLD (2004) by Patty Griffin

TOP OF THE WORLD (2004) by Patty Griffin

Patty Griffin, born 16 March 1964, is an American singer-songwriter and musician. She is a recipient of the Americana Music Association's highest honor as "Artist of the Year" in 2007, as well as taking home the award for best album for Children Running Through. Griffin wrote and recorded "Top of the World" for her would-be 2000 album Silver Bell. But a dispute with her label A&M Records caused the album to go unreleased and Griffin to be dropped, although copies of Silver Bell circulated ...

FORTUNE TELLER (1966) by the Throb

FORTUNE TELLER (1966) by the Throb

From obscure origins as a Sydney-based surf-instrumental band, The Throb emerged in 1965 and briefly shot to national prominence. Despite its short tenure, the group left no doubt about its punkish potential and they have been immortalised on record by two superb singles, their snarling "garage-punk" version of "Fortune Teller", which smashed its way to the top of the national charts in early 1966, and their group arrangement of the old English folk song, "Black (Is The Colour Of My True ...

CAN'T BE SURE by The Sundays on French Radio 1992 - the definitive slideshow

An English alternative rock band, which released three albums in 1990, 1992 and 1997 respectively. The core of the Sundays is Harriet Wheeler (vocals) and husband, David Gavurin (guitar). This is from French radio 1992 and is recorded live in front of an audience. I have tried to put together the best and most complete slideshow of the Sundays. Comments are invited.

WHEN I TAKE MY SUGAR TO TEA (1947) by the Nat King Cole Trio

WHEN I TAKE MY SUGAR TO TEA (1947) by the Nat King Cole Trio

Early in his career, Nat King Cole started a ground breaking trio in 1937, playing piano with Oscar Moore on guitar and Wesley Prince on bass. This version of the King Cole Trio (as it was known) played a mixture of novely songs, jazz and pop tunes, often with unison singing from all three members, as well as Nat's lead vocal. When Prince was drafted, Johnny Miller took over on bass in 1942, and by this time, Nat's voice was more to the fore, and there were less novelty songs. The melody to ...

FOUR UNTIL LATE (1937) by Robert Johnson

FOUR UNTIL LATE (1937) by Robert Johnson

I first heard 'Four Until Late' sung by Eric Clapton on the Fresh Cream album. It was one of the first songs I learned on guitar, and some of the misheard lyrics I still sing, such as 'She made so many men wear apron overalls'. Robert Johnson, of course, was the author of the song (although clearly influenced by Blind Blake's 'Georgia Bound'- see my video). In 1937, he travelled to Dallas, Texas, for his second and final recording session in a makeshift studio at the Brunswick Record ...

MARS (1970) by Love Sculpture

MARS (1970) by Love Sculpture

Love Sculpture, sixties guitar trio, doing the Holst classical piece, Mars, from their second and final album Forms and Feelings. Guitarist Dave Edmunds has created an abridged, spacey and propulsive version, going more for atmosphere than technical guitar wizardry displayed on other LS instrumentals such as Sabre Dance and Farandole. The accompanying slide show reflects the psychedelic feel of the track, incorporating a painting from the back cover of the LP. Comments are welcome. ... mars ...

ROSE ROOM (1939) by the Benny Goodman Sextet featuring Charlie Christian on guitar

ROSE ROOM (1939) by the Benny Goodman Sextet featuring Charlie Christian on guitar

Rose Room was one of the first studio tunes recorded 2 October 1939 by guitarist Charlie Christian after he joined the Benny Goodman Sextet. I love this and other Goodman small group tracks as they are a good introduction to jazz and swing. They are popular circa forties' era tunes, with members taking melodic solos that can be appreciated against the chord changes. These tracks initially helped me 'get' jazz, rather than being scared off by some of the less user friendly forms of it. The ...

HOY HOY HOY (2003) by Wayne Hancock live featuring Eddie Biebel on guitar

Wayne Hancock is an alternative country singer, and his music has been described as juke joint swing. He plays a mixture of honky tonk, rockabilly, Western swing, blues, and old-time country. Hancock plays lots of live gigs, mainly in small bars. He travels the country in a van with enough room for his musicians and equipment. "I'm happiest on the road....the fact that I'm out here and ain't washing dishes is my idea of success." This track 'Hoy Hoy Hoy' was done in the fifties by the ...

JIGSAW PUZZLE BLUES (1968) by Fleetwood Mac featuring Danny Kirwan

JIGSAW PUZZLE BLUES (1968) by Fleetwood Mac featuring Danny Kirwan

Some people might not realise that Fleetwood Mac was a blues band which morphed into a progressive blues rock band before they hit the big time with Stevie Nicks et al. The original band had great guitarists: not only Peter Green, but also Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan. Danny Kirwan went on to have a significant role in the early evolving Fleetwood Mac: singing, playing guitar, composing and arranging. This is one of his early efforts off the 'English Rose' album. It was also the 'B' side ...

ROCK MY PLIMSOUL (1968) by the Jeff Beck Group

ROCK MY PLIMSOUL (1968) by the Jeff Beck Group

This song was off Beck's first solo album, 'Truth'. It appears to have been borrowed from 'Rock Me Baby', although lists Beck and singer Rod Stewart as co-writers. Nevertheless, a good song, with great guitar and singing, off a great album. Supposed to be one of the first heavy metal albums, and there is certainly some heavy guitar. However it is also fairly diverse, including even an acoustic version of Greensleeves. See also my video for Beck's Bolero off this album. Comments are invited ...
