GCW - 3D raytrace animations & images (1993)

Presenting more goodies from the 1993 "GCW" shareware CD-ROM, including some autodesk .FLI animations (such as the video's intro) -- which is such an obsolete format that I had to dig up an ancient Windows 3.1 program to convert them into .AVI video format -- as well as many spectacular raytraced images, which was the state of the art for 3-D imaging back then. Raytracing provides a photorealistic view of computer generated objects in space, but takes up a large amount of processing power to ...

Vintage .GIF fantasy artwork

Vintage .GIF fantasy artwork

Images and music taken from an old CD-ROM, dated 1993, containing many .GIF files of computer generated artwork and .MOD files of digitally sampled music. Likely most of this was created by Amiga computer users and distributed through various bbses, some of which you see advertised in the images. The art has dates going back to 1985 and some of it is really quite spectacular, given the limitations of computer graphics at the time. The music is from an excellent .MOD rendition of "Toccata ...

1984 Sharp portable VCR

1984 Sharp portable VCR

In decades past, basically anything with a handle on top was considered "portable." This 1984 Sharp "My Video" VC-363 falls into that category, featuring a mono VHS VCR, analog TV tuner, timer, wired remote control, optional battery pack, and padded carrying case.

Why good speakers aren't made of plastic

This strange little Symphonette "satellite speaker" is quite stylish in its faux woodgrain pedestal design, but clearly wasn't built for playing music. Put any decent amount of bass into it, and its thin plastic cabinet vibrates like crazy.

GE Bedroom Entertainment System

GE Bedroom Entertainment System

General Electric had many great products in the early to mid 1980s, and this was one of them... the AM/FM stereo clock radio cassette player, model 7-4960. It came with a pair of small matching speakers, but it sounds outstanding when hooked up to good quality speakers. The sound is rich and full-bodied, even with just a tone control. The tuner has impressive AM reception and sound quality, too. The cassette deck is play-only and needs some work.

Come See My Combo (dollar store Jazz)

Come See My Combo (dollar store Jazz)

I had a few minutes left at the end of my Digital8 camcorder tape, so I decided to use it up while playing a rather nice song from a generic "Jazz Combo" CD bought at a dollar store. Most of the tracks are rather boring and repetitive, but this one stands out with a catchy riff and high quality musicianship, especially from the drummer. I wish I could credit the composer and performers, but the CD is just labelled "digimusic Essentials Collection," by "digiview Entertainment" of Dunellen ...

NJ fall foliage & driving, October 2009

Various scenes recorded in mid to late October 2009. The limited resolution of my SD camcorder and youtube's encoding won't do justice to the detail of the leaves, but at least you can get an idea of the different colors seen here in central NJ this Fall. And yes, that was a Smart Car at 0:32!
