Blanca Rosa Gil, ´tortura`, bolero cha cha

Blanca Rosa Gil, ´tortura`, bolero cha cha

´Bolero es la vida`.Bolero is life. Gabriel Garcia Márquez. One of my favourite boleros. Cuban torch singer Blanca Rosa Gil, the Maria Callas of the bolero not only because of her dark, impressive voice but of the dramatic tension she is capable of conveying to her singing, is my beloved voice from Cuba along with priestess of music Omara Portuondo. Blanca is the voice of the extroverted, urban passion, Omara of the interiorised, earthy ceremony. In the 50´s she performed with mambo ...

Victoria de los Angeles, Gerald Moore, 1953, El Vito, trad., arr. Joaquín Nin

Victoria de los Angeles, Gerald Moore, 1953, El Vito, trad., arr. Joaquín Nin

Another fine piece of vocal and pianistic art from Spain. Cuban pianist and composer Joaquín Nin, 1879-1949, found it and included it in his colection of ´20 cantos populares españoles`, 1923. By the way, he was the father of Anais Nin . El vito (=some coin) has overt sexual insinuations. Did this thing run into the family? Lol ! Victoria de los Angeles and Gerald Moore at their best and the best recording of this work, 1953. It is a fondamentalist remark, I recognise, but I think I am right ...

´´The accursed snake`` (το καταραμένο φίδι), op.5, is a ballet suite mixing various elements of greek folklore mythology and music. Hadjidakis composed it in 1949-1950. It was first presented by the Greek Ballet Theatre of Rallou Manou in 1951. Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis (1925-1994) and greek painter Yannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989) created a recognisable idiom which acts as a hallmark in the local artistic expression in the decades of 1960 and 1970. They were both shrewd observers of the world, day-dreamers and fighters. They created an imaginary world where ancient Greece, byzantine centuries, modern era and the popular music (outcasts´rebetica included) mingled scholarly in search of a contemporay ethos and morality. They both ...
