Most of the civil war action in Brunswick County was off-shore and in the Cape Fear river basin. Smithville (now Southport) and Wilmington were the centers of these land and water battles. Ironclads fought off-shore of the South Brunswick Islands. Tubbs Inlet was a key landing area for Confederate blockade runners. There are many ship wrecks just off shore of the Brunswick Islands.
