Early Winter Camping in Gifford Pinchot National Forest

Early Winter Camping in Gifford Pinchot National Forest

It is a slide show, not a video. We did a one-nighter backpacking trip to the Wind River area in the South Cascades in Washington State. We are planning on doing some snow camping there in the future, and we wanted to try out our gear, and get some winter camping practice. It was an intensive trip, so there was no time to do any reviews and such. We were basically busy building the shelter, cutting fire wood, and getting the fire going. But oh it was fun!

Making Pine needle tea on stove made from a tin can

Making Pine needle tea on stove made from a tin can

The stove is made of a tin can, based on the instructions on this web site: www.backpacking.net The Pine needle tea we made turned out quite okay, especially when we added sugar to it. Yeah, the fire is rather big :), but the stove is meant to heat up 2 cups of water, but we had twice as much water, so we kept the heat up using the air pump.

Want Some Douglas Fir Needle Tea?

Want Some Douglas Fir Needle Tea?

I didn't drink it all... I cut about a cup-full of pine needles of the tip of Douglas Fir branches, and simmered it in hot water on the camp stove for about an hour. It turned out too bitter for drinking. I wanted to use pine needles, but couldn't find any, so I used Douglas Fir instead

Finnish stove - Use an upright log with fire burning inside it as a camp stove

Finnish stove - Use an upright log with fire burning inside it as a camp stove

I did use a skil-saw to cut most of the notch depths, and a chisel to finish it. Ray Mears used a chain saw for his stove. But it can be done just using a knife, but it would take much longer. Or, like a buddy of mine did, just cleave the log in 4 parts, and tie together with a rope at the bottom. I am not aware of it been called by any other name than the "Finnish stove". But I assume this technique has been used in other parts of the world too.
