Amhrán na Leabhar

Amhrán na Leabhar

The title of this traditional Scottish lament can be translated from the Scot Gaelic as Lament For The Lost Books or The Song For The Books. Played here on a Low D, cylindrical bore, aluminum whistle made for me by an acquaintance.

Alexander's Hornpipe

Moving right along with my apparent hornpipe fetish, here's one called Alexander's.

Rights of Man

Rights of Man

Okay, I admit it. I'm going through some sort of hornpipe phase. This one, also known as Bedlam Boys, is credited to James hill who was one of the great fiddlers from the Tyneside region of Ireland during the mid 19th century. Hill was also one of the most prolific composers of traditional-style Irish fiddle tunes.

Flowers of Edinburgh

Flowers of Edinburgh

I recently read that the hornpipe traces its origins to Scotland and northern England. This is a well known one in Trad circles. Played in the key of D here.

Southwind

This Irish waltz has been credited to Donal O'Sullivan, but it has more often simply been called traditional.

Flop Eared Mule

Flop Eared Mule

I've heard this in both the keys of D and G. The fingering is the same either way, just one string higher to play in D. I chose to record it here in G. Yes, I have a slight flub at the end, but it wasn't bad enough to mess with re-recording the whole thing. Just pretend it's not there. :o)

The Boys of Blue Hill

The Boys of Blue Hill

I think this is Scottish. I learned it a dozen years or so ago on mountain dulcimer and just learned it on mandolin. It fits real nice on the mando fretboard.

Down Yonder

Down Yonder

Bluegrass standard on mando. Lots of fun to play but has a habit of getting "stuck" in one's head, which can get annoying after eight hours or so.
