PROGRESSIVE ROCK GUITAR: Melodic Soloing Concepts

Improvising a "melodic" solo is one of the greatest challenges for any guitarist, prog or otherwise. This is because it's so personal, requiring the player to draw both upon their knowledge of the fretboard and their own interpretation of "soul." Some of the great melodic prog players are Steve Howe, David Gilmour, Steve Hackett and lesser-known, but supremely gifted soloists like Bill Nelson (ex-Bebop Deluxe) or Roine Stolt of the Flower Kings. Heavy Blues Guitar Solo on a Paul Reed Smith PRS Sweet 16 Amp

A quick demonstration of a hard-rock tone from the amazing PRS Sweet 16 amp. The overdrive you hear is a combination of the 16's tube-preamp gain and a Danelectro Transparent Overdrive pedal. The guitar is a Jeff Beck Strat with dimarzio Area-series single coil pickups. The Sweet 16 has a million other great tones, too, including many blues, clean, and fat, soulful rock sounds. PROGRESSIVE ROCK GUITAR improv (Steve Howe, Robert Fripp-style)

A brief prog improvisation in E minor (Aeolian) combining various modal ideas, chord shapes, and tensions. Guitarists like Steve Howe (Yes), Robert Fripp (King Crimson), Steve Hackett (Genesis, solo), and Alex Lifeson (Rush) are probably best known for this lyrical soloing approach. And for you gearheads, I'm using an Ibanez AG95 archtop guitar fitted with Seymour Duncan "Phat Staple" (alnico) pickups and a digital-rack preamp system. --pete prown

FLAMENCO GUITAR on a Acoustic 12-String (Al Di Meola, Paco de Lucia)

Pete Prown (of Guitar Garden and also Sir Clive & the Raging Cartographers) playing some modern flamenco-style guitar on a Seagull S12 Coastline 12-string acoustic. It's an excellent and affordable instrument crafted by Godin Guitars from Canada. Really nice neck and playability. Stays in tune really well, too.
