Baby Pygmy Hippo Swim!
Our baby pygmy hippo has been doing very well and continuing to grow stronger every day! The keepers have now started letting baby and mum Venus into the pool for her first swims, at first the baby was reluctant to go out of her depth and remained around the edges, but she has grown in confidence and in just a few days has started to swim around the pool and is learning to hold her breath underwater!

Baby Pygmy Hippo!
After a long wait Colchester Zoo is delighted to announce the birth of our first pygmy hippo at the Kingdom of the Wild! Venus the pygmy hippo gave birth on the morning of Friday the 27th November to a healthy female baby! Mother and baby have been doing well and have built a tight bond with the baby suckling strongly. Keepers have been weighing the new arrival every other day to ensure she continues to grow at a healthy rate, and Venus has proven herself to be an excellent mother constantly ...

Otto the White Rhino arrives at Colchester Zoo!
A new adult male White Rhino named Otto arrived at Colchester Zoo on the morning of Friday 27th November, travelling all the way from Knuthenborg Park and Safari in Denmark on an EEP (European Endangered Species Programme) recommendation! Otto travelled in a crate loaded onto a lorry and a special crane had to be hired to unload him when he arrived, along with plenty of help from the Keepers and staff!

Christmas Sack Tiger Enrichment Feed!
Keepers gave our two Amur Tigers Igor and Anoushka a special Christmas treat with a Santa Sack themed enrichment feed! Two Santa sacks filled with a Hessian bag of meat were hung from a rope in the enclosure, ready for the tigers to work to rip the sacks open and win their dinner!

Santa's Magical Enchanted Grotto 2009!
Take a look at Santa's Magical Enchanted Grotto, open every Magic of Christmas Event day from 9.30am until 4.00pm! Every paying child will have the chance to meet Santa and receive a present from him, and experience the magical displays awaiting inside! The Magic of Christmas takes place on the 28th & 29th November, 5th & 6th December, 12th & 13th December and the 17th until the 24th. Make sure to come along and enjoy all the festive fun!

Meerkat Pups Born!
Pippa our female Meerkat has given birth her first two pups on the 22nd October! The pups were kept well hidden by mum for the first few weeks, but they have been growing well and have now started to venture out into their enclosure and cen be seen exploring watched closely by mum!
Pumpkin Enrichment Fun!
The animals have been enjoying the kindly donated pumpkins following Halloween..watch the video to see the lemurs, hornbill and Zamba the baby white rhino eating, pecking and rolling the pumpkins around their enclosures!
