The Making of

The making of "Star Wars: Legacy" #42-- In stores now. Or you can order your copy from: www.darkhorse.com Digital painting is done freehand in Photoshop CS, on a Mac. Recorded with Snaps Pro X and final post done with Adobe After Effects and Mpeg Streamclip. Actual time for completion was approx. 3 hours. Sketching with paint...

This is an old one... I don't know when I did it. Found it on my hard drive. It's a 20 minute sketch (with watered down acrylic paints) (And once again, a cat makes a guest appearance. Extremely common in my house. If they are awake, they're going to walk across my art desk.)

Airbrush sketch-warm up...

Airbrush sketch-warm up...

This is me trying to warm up before starting an airbrushed photo-real portrait. Basically, not really trying to paint anything specific, or of any high quality. I very seldom use my airbrushes anymore, so I feel the need to warm-up a little when I do. This is nothing special, and I know some of you have made comments about my doing the same old thing over and over. But this is not an attempt to do anything original or extravagant. I thought some out there might enjoy my sketching-- this is ...

Dragon...

This vid is nothing new or original from me. Many who know my vids will notice that it is pretty much the same thing as a few of the other dragon vids on here. But there is good reason for that. I created this piece for a tutorial bit in Art Scene International Magazine. The feature is to be a "step by step" how to focusing on specific details such as scales and fire. I tried to recreate a painting based mostly on the youtube vid "Speed painting a Dragon... Again" since that one seems to be ...

Digital Sketching techniques: Fur

Photoshop CS Wacom Intuos 3 tablet Snaps Pro X vid capture This video is an experiment in "mini-tutorials" to share some of my digital techniques with those who have been requesting them. I've been trying to find a way to make something like this available without hindering an already tight chaotic daily schedule. I threw this together quite fast, so there might be some quirks in it. If it works out, and people find this to be helpful I will try to do more. You'll notice that there is a ...

11 minute Dinosaur sketch... (time-lapsed down to 3 min 16 sec)

This is nothing hugely impressive... I was testing out a new camera as well as testing out After Effects' "Auto Levels". (Whenever my hand goes away from the pic the contrast changes.. Drives me nuts. I need better lighting set up) I thought it would be good to put it up in youtube to sort of fill in the gaps of time between my bigger pieces.

Realtime Speed Sketching: The warm-up doodle

Here is what I do sometimes to get in the mode... I'll scribble out something spontaneous and pointless... Like cartoon characters, or what not. Anyway- I am going to attempt to start uploading some more realtime stuff, with the goal of keeping it under ten minutes. This cat thing went about ten and a half minutes, so if you see anything wierd, it's cuz I had to cut out a few second snippets here and there. I tried to lay it out so people can see my technique and dissect it for their own use ...

Animation Scraps: Water

Animation Scraps: Water

The only element that is 3D in this clip is the water. Everything else is Photoshop layers. The attempt is NOT to make it look real, but to animate my own painting style.. I even attempted to "dumb down" the 3D look of the water and make it look more "painterly". 3D is Lightwave Artwork is Photoshop Compositing and editing is After Effects.
