Boy Blue - Boogie Children

Boy Blue - Boogie Children

This is a version of that classic blues number by Boy Blue, voc/harp, Willie Jones, guitar and Joe Lee on drums. To me this is a great example of what'd get you going at a Juke joint back when. This is from the Alan Lomax "The Blues Roll On" lp. The group do another song on the lp named Joe Lee's Rock (composed by the drummer) which has become fairly notorious from having it's intro sampled by (I think) Moby. This song, Boogie Children, remains unsampled and is just a great example an ealry ...

Blind Boy Fuller and Sonny Terry - I Don't Want No Skinny Woman

This is Blind Boy Fuller on guitar/voc, Sonny Terry on harp and Oh Red laying down some barely audible washboard. This was recorded in 1940 and appears on the lp "Carolina Blues" on Flyright records. Always brings a smile to my face this tune. Hope it does you.

Georgia Turner - Rising Sun Blues (House Of The Rising Sun)

Georgia Turner - Rising Sun Blues (House Of The Rising Sun)

Here's an early recording of an old cautionary tale named here as Rising Sun Blues. The theme was later elaborated on and made famous by The Animals "House Of The Rising Sun". You'd find the early songs sung by men and women with the men seemingly talking of a gambler and the women warning of that house of ruin. This version by Georgia Taylor was recorded by Alan Lomax at her home in Kentucky in the early 40's. This song appears on the cd "Popular Song Book" released by Rounder Records. A ...

Short Stuff Macon - Corrina

Short Stuff Macon - Corrina

My local record shop owner has come up trumps for me again this week! He handed me this little gem of an lp and charged me the un-princely sum of £5. Here's to him. The lp features Rev. Gary Davis on one side and Short Stuff Macon (John Wesley Macon) on the other. Superb! Macon plays that sort of rythmic hill country style in the vein of RL Burnside or Jesse Mae Hemphill. Here are the sleeve notes: "Short Stuff" Macon is a small, sturdy, Good-looking blues singer-guitarist from Crawford ...

Short Stuff Macon - My Jack Don't Drink No Water

My local record shop owner has come up trumps for me again this week! He handed me this little gem of an lp and charged me the un-princely sum of £5. Here's to him. The lp features Rev. Gary Davis on one side and Short Stuff Macon (John Wesley Macon) on the other. Superb! Macon plays that sort of rythmic hill country style in the vein of RL Burnside or Jesse Mae Hemphill. Cora Mae Bryant - Born To Die

Cora Mae Bryant - Born To Die

Cora Mae Bryant - Born To Die The daughter of guitar legend Curley Weaver, Music Maker have her pegged as a blues scholar who's house is somewhat a blues museum. Whatever the case she sure plays 'em good! Her voice took me by surprise at first but I just love it. This is taken from a currently available cd called Sisters Of The South released by the Music Maker Relief Foundation. It's 2 cd's of pure gold and I strongly urge you to buy it and support the foundation. You won't be dissapointed ...

Big Bill Broonzy - Diggin' My Potatoes

Big Bill Broonzy - Diggin' My Potatoes

A great feel to this song by the great Big Bill Broonzy. This was another of my charity shop finds and although it's a bit battered it's a good'n. Nearly every other version I've heard of this features washboard or some other accompaniment. No bad thing but here for your listening pleasure is just Big Bill and his geetar! Recorded 1956 and taken from a Storyville comp' lp.
