The use of Oils and Flavourings for Pike

The use of Oils and Flavourings for Pike

During the second blank session in succession of the winter so far (bad run at the moment!) I take some time to explain the importance of flavouring baits in higly coloured water. We were on the Severn at Stourport after the deluge of rain late in November. As Cockermouth floundered under a foot of rain so the river Severn received a huge influx of water from the Welsh mountains. It was 8-9 feet up and flooded across the fields! Fishing the main River was out then! We settled on fishing the ...

The Beginning of The Canal Predator Campaign 2009

The Beginning of The Canal Predator Campaign 2009

A brief overview of our plans for the winter months, unfortunately this initial session got off to a poor start! Just one decent run all day resulting in one lost Zed of around 3lb or so! Because we fished the venue on a Monday, we came to the conclusion it had been hammered over the weekend and also judging by the number of deadbait packets strewn all over the towpath that was the case. Please, TAKE YOUR LITTER HOME!

The First Pike of The Winter Campaign 2009

The First Pike of The Winter Campaign 2009

The First Piking Trip 2009 was to the River Severn at Stourport, the River was very low compared to normal levels, in fact I don't think I have ever seen it so low as there had not been any rain in four weeks! First put in off our usual peg and my float was away, again just like last season a very big fish of upper double/low 20 proportions. Again, It shook the hooks out-very annoying! Sam had this the first Pike of the season at 9lb 8oz and two more smaller samples while I had to content ...

At Last! A New PB Common Carp For Me of 18lb 1oz

After a quiet day, feeding up all day down the margins payed off with a slow tick over take met by solid resistance! This was possibly the best fight I have had off a Carp ever, and when it rolled on the top we knew another PB had fallen on this day! This water has now held 3 pb's this season, Pete's former PB (before Shatterford) of 21lb 8oz and mine and Jord's pb's of 18lb 1oz and 20lb 4oz respectively!!

Jord Playing his First UK 20lb Carp

First chuck of the day out by the island and Jord was in, straight away he said it was a big fish as it fought differently to the majority of the fish on this venue. Usually the fish here come in fairly quickly and then fight like mad under the rod tip, but this fish just used it's weight and went on several big runs straight away! A lovely looking fish for the lad, well done Jord!
