I had the opportunity to repair a sound installation on an Athearn Challenger in N scale. The engine came from the factory with an MRC sound board, but the customer wanted a Soundtraxx Tsunami. So he sent it to a vendor who shall remain nameless, but who screwed up something somewhere. So I got the task of figuring it out. It turns out you really need to have a DCC Programming Track booster in order to program the sound decoders. So the client had one sent to me, and voila, problem solved ...
