With the lakes being frozen over, it is difficult for birds to get the food they need, and so they move to other areas where there is food, some choose rivers, as they are flowing, and dont really ice up. The Coot is a cousin to the Moorhen. The coot is larger and all black. The coot grows up to 38cm and the Moorhen only 30cm. The coot does not have any white other than on its Shield and beak. This can be easily remembered by the saying R is in RED and there are no R's in COOT. Music (C) Rob Elliott

The Lapwing is a medium sized wading bird, that grows up to 30cm in length. Over the past years, this beautiful bird, has suffered a devistating decline in numbers, and as such, was placed on the Red List. Music (c) Rob Elliott

This beautiful bird has a special place in my heart. If you have watched my videos from the early days, you will probably have seen a Moorhen, that Niteblogger alled Hope. She lost a foot, and carried on as though it was still there. Even went on to have 3 young ones of her own.
