On November 16, 2009, Sen. Barbara Miklulski participated in the official opening of the Life Sciences Institute of the Baltimore City Community College at the University of Maryland biopark. After helping to cut the ribbon, she met with a class of BCCC students and listened to their goals and aspirations. Mikulski was instrumental in getting federal funds for the the Institute.

Approximately 200 regional and national health care professionals, environmental industry experts, and educators gathered Nov. 6, 2009 for a conference called "Environmental Excellence in Health Care: Greening Maryland Hospitals." It was organized by the environmental nursing department of the University of Maryland School of Nursing.

UM Nurses Environmental Conf - EPA awards

At the "Environmental Excellence in Health Care: Greening Maryland Hospitals" conference at the University of Maryland School of Nursing Nov. 6, the Environmental Protection Agency awarded "Trailblazer" awards to six Maryland hospitals for their pioneering work in making hospitals healthier and a more sustainable environment for patient, staff, and their communities. The EPA also presented a special award to the School of Nursing group that organized the conference.
