You may have seen Slam do a variation of this cut with his own trio in the 1947 movie "Boy! A call for a little pep has been answered. :) In addition to the others' fine work here, Glenn Miller gets off a particularly hot solo here (nearly a full chorus!) while 20 year old Gene Krupa fits the feel nicely. ;) The personell for this landmark November 14, 1929 session are: Red McKenzie - comb Pee Wee Russell - clarinet Coleman Hawkins - tenor sax Glenn Miller (yes, THAT one!) - trombone Eddie Condon - banjo Jack Bland - Guitar Al Morgan - bass Gene Krupa - drums Dig..... ... Like Artie's "Stardust", this cut is just a classic that fits like a glove. LOVE Pee Wee's wheezing accompaniment here. IMO, it was this cut, this session, that really helped establish Hawk as a first rate ballad soloist, 10 years before his "Body and Soul". His tone and approach here are full, rich, and firm, yet silky smooth. Slow, no schmaltz and a bucketload of soul & feel here. :) The personell for this landmark November 14, 1929 session are: Red McKenzie - comb Pee Wee Russell ... Red ...
