It mainly came to prominence in the 19th century to house the deceased of Glasgow's merchant and wealthy elite at a time when Glasgow was the Second City of the (British) Empire. This building dates from 1825-29 and was designed by Thomas Hamilton. It is considered a building of international significance and may have been designed to blend in with the nearby National Monument on Calton Hill to form an Edinburgh Acropolis.The central doric temple contains the splendid oval hall with shallow coffered ceiling, and cast iron columns supporting the balcony.
