In 1992 Kenneth Snelson installed his 85' sculpture "Triple Crown" in Kansas City. This video photographed by the film maker Bruce Basset shows the final stage when the huge tensegrity sculpture was hoisted onto its base columns by four cranes.

In 1960 while trying to develop an extendable planar structure I discovered a tension and compression form similar to woven fabric. It is composed of struts that follow a zigzag course, the rigid parts held firmly in place by tension wires. Leonardo da Vinci in 1474, after studying the Roman poet Lucretius (50 BC), invented a model of the atom, its parts represented as meshing gears. The work was lost along with pages from his Codex Atlanticus. Pope Alexander VI condemned Leonardo's model as heretical.
