J S Bach "Herzlich tut mich verlangen" BWV 727

Here we have a clearly vocally inspired chorale, with no introduction, nor interludes, thus anticipating the "Orgelbüchlein" type composition. There is a predominance of the sighing motive which fits the concept of ""verlangen"" we deal with in the text. Though very common in early Bach's musical production (vg "Neumeister Collection"), this somewhat later offspring shows a slightly ornamented chorale melody and a final cadence characterized by a dissonance of a diminished seventh, just on ...

Couperin, Fr Messe à l' usage des Paroisses Plainchant Kyrie, 5ème et dernier

This time, the "plainchant", in symmetry to the first verset of the Kyrie, is heard from the the bass region and drives the Kyrie to a close with rigourism and intensity. As in the first verset, here we also have a procession in the solemn rythm of a march.

Couperin, Fr Messe à l' usage des Paroisses Récit de Cromorne Kyrie, 3ème couplet

The effect caused by the sudden change of mood conveyed by this "Récit de Cromorne" is akin to that of the "Messe à l' usage des Convents", but quite more profound, due to the strengh of the "Plaichant" and of the "Fugue sur les Jeux d' Anches" (a compact mass of sound that denies its modal appeal, thanks to a G sharp). As the "Painchant du Premier Kyrie" bursts into our musical sensibility, as a sudden declaration of intentions coming from above, and as the "Fugue" impetuously ... French ...

J S Bach Lob sei dem allmächtigen Gott BWV 602

Advent chorale of the middle phase, according to Russell Stinson (Op. cit. p. 105). It has never been harmonized by Bach. There exists an arrangement by M. von Hessen, which can be found as n.º 16, Volume II, of Schoeberlein "Schatz des Liturgischen und Gemeinde gesangs" (Bandenhoecks & Ruprechts Verlag - Göttingen, 1868). Here we are dealing witn a paramount example of what Albert Riemenschneider calls "a selection expressing the atmosphere of dignified praise" that "(...) should be played ...

J S Bach "Herr Gott, nun sei gepreiset" BWV 601

Advent chorale. Two versions: the second ("Herr Gott, nun sei gepreiset", now played) is overtly laudatory and solemn. As a consequence of such an understanding, we chose a denser registration, providing the chorale prelude with a very clear pedal part; the first ("Herr Christ, der ein'ge Gottessohn" - watch it in this very channel) expresses deep joy as the predominant mood. So, we opt for a not so heavy registration, and preserved the pedal part blending with the other three voices ...

Couperin, Fr. Messe à l' usage des Paroisses - Plainchant en Taille - Kyrie, 1er couplet

The "Messe à l' usage des Paroisses", unlike her sister (conceived «pour les Convents de Religieux et Religieuses»), is based upon the «plainchant en taille», from the Mass «Cunctipotens genitor Deus», what gives it one specific characteristic: the lack of tonal unity (also unlike the Second Mass), according to its model. Nevertheless, the "Première Messe" is endowed with a deep sense of unity and musical equipoise. In the "premier couplet du Kyrie" the "plainchant" bursts into our ...
