Maqams: Playing A Hijaz & A Rast on the Duduk in A

Maqams: Playing A Hijaz & A Rast on the Duduk in A

Hi All, Another video on Maqams, this time basing them in A. Here i start off with playing A Hijaz, and then move onto Maqam Rast. Rast is interesting since the 3rd and 7th degrees of the scale are a quarter tone flatter then the western major scale. These tones are very unique sounding and sound very special on instruments such as Duduk. I'm not sure what the proper method or technique for quarter tonal playing is on Duduk, whether you're supposed to use the lips or use the fingers. Here i ...

B Hijaz on the A Duduk

B Hijaz on the A Duduk

Hi again, forgive the shortness of the video, i'm just getting over the flu, and haven't played duduk in awhile, so this was kinda tiring and hard to keep it in tune and interesting. I've seen various videos of Dudukists playing melodies based around the Middle eastern modes, primarily i've heard them using Hijaz... but using it in the Key of B as opposed to the key of D as its normally used (at least in Egypt). It works pretty well on the Duduk in A, since the lowest note (F#) is the 5th of ...

Duduk Improvisation in F#

Duduk Improvisation in F#

Hi All, Another picture collage, since this was actually a happy accident, and i didn't intend to make a video... I just recieved two new reeds via fedex, That i ordered from Gevorg Dabaghyan, Via Vache Sharafyan. The reeds are very different from my current reed, which is slightly longer, and bigger. My older reed had a bassier sound... But also produces a poor tone, and creates allot of breath noise, especialy on the vibrato. The new reeds are much more easier to play, and are a million ...

How To Play F Lydian On The A Duduk

How To Play F Lydian On The A Duduk

Hi all. Here is a video lesson for you guys to try practicing something new. Now most people spend time playing scales in the Key of A on an A duduk, but you can of course play other scales in other keys by half holing. Some scales require allot of half holing which is why we would prefer not to play these. An example of a semi hard scale to do is F Lydian, from the C Major Scale. On an A Duduk we have a C#, an F# and a G#, which do not fit in that key, so we have to half hole these notes ...

Dreamfullofzen - The Kokin Flute

A short Clip of a demo i did trying out my new Kokin Flute, which i got from Erik The Flute Maker. I've only been playing it for about 2 weeks or so, and am slowly getting the hang of it. The accompanying pics are of my discography and some promo shots. Learning to play both this flute & the Duduk have been very fulfilling experiences, and i'm looking forward to using them more in my music. I also plan to get more flutes in the future from Eric. Thanks for listening.

The Armenian Duduk

The Armenian Duduk

Here's me improvising on my Karen Hakobyan Duduk in A. I haven't played in a week so my lips got tired very quickly and the reed wasn't warmed up well. The Double Reed instrument is an extremely expressive and wonderful sounding instrument that is captivating and inspiring. I've been playing for about 3 months now, and have still much to learn and work on, especially in the way of playing more microtonal and middle eastern scales on the instrument, which require half holing technique, strong ...

Echoes Of Rain Live - A.U.C Faculty Showcase 2009

A live version of a song from my album "Silent Echoes". The version on the album is half improvised, so i felt inclined to improvise it live, and this is what came from it. Unfortunately the sound is from the camera, which didn't pick up all the cool modulating delayed effects properly... Performed at the AUC new campus as part of the official opening.
