FM Sports Talk Coming to Chicago?
It was never something that entered my mind until I read an article on the Crain's Chicago Business website written by Ed Sherman. www.chicagobusiness.com Apparently, the FM Sports Talk binge may about to sweep Chicago sometime within the next year. Sherman pointed out how both of the Windy City's jock talkers (670 The Score WSCR-CBS) and 1000 WMVP ESPN (ESPN O&O) are doing very well right now in the ratings. The Score currently owns the radio rights to White Sox broadcasts. That contract between the Pale Hose and WSCR ends at the end of the upcoming 2010 baseball season. Jerry Reinsdorf (Sox) and CBS Radio are currently at an impasse over a new contract--apparently talks are that the White Sox want to be carried on an FM flagship station. Perhaps, they're taking advantage of the reason FM sports binge that has swept radio, most recently with KDKA-FM 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh. WMVP was the former WLUP AM 1000 which had changed formats to sports radio ending its reign as the top of the power house AM stations with comedy and 'personality' radio. (I used to put a tape on before leaving for work so I could listen to the rest of the show later in the day. Something that I'd been doing during the many years of listening to Steve, the main reason I still have so many tapes, and I was lucky enough to hang on to them, and they actually still play, for now!) This is from Steve's self-described 'dark days' at WMVP when he had recently parted ways with his former partner of almost 15 years (Garry Meier), was struggling with personal issues, as well as struggling with the direction of his career and station management. While they may have been hard times for Steve he never failed to deliver his usual free-form comedy to his fans. The first bit references radio rival Howard Stern who was previously on AM 1000 before the station changed formats. www.Dahl.com www.Dahl.com Steve Dahl, Bruce Wolf "Dueling George Baileys" Just in time for Christmas here is one of the great Steve Dahl/Bruce Wolf bits from the now out of print "365 Days Of Service" (1995) which was a compilation of their first year together (as well as being a satire of the album "A Decade Of Service" which celebrated the Steve & Garry 20 year anniversary. "Dueling George Baileys" is obviously a parody of the Frank Capra Christmas holiday, classic movie "It's A Wonderful Life" which starred Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed ("Mary, don't ya know me, Mary?"). And I have to say, with all love and due respect to Steve, Bruce probably did have the better George Bailey! This bit is from Steve's self-described 'dark days' at WMVP, and while I'm sure he was struggling with personal issues, station management, and the then current status of his career, his show was consistently as funny as it ever was.
