Great Books - Arcadia by Tom Stoppard; discussed by Rebecca Nesvet

Great Books - Arcadia by Tom Stoppard; discussed by Rebecca Nesvet

To celebrate World Book Day, Rebecca Nesvet, senior lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Gloucestershire, has chosen to discuss Tom Stoppard's 1993 play, Arcadia. "Judged the greatest modern British play by Independent columnist Jonathan Hari, Arcadia follows the adventures of fictional Regency prodigy Lady Thomasina Coverley and her increasingly bewildered private tutor Septimus Hodge through a maze of farce, wordplay, romance and tragedy. In the following century, Thomasina and Septimus are joined by a group of modern scholars of various disciplines in pursuit of the answer to the greatest question: when people are not wholly in charge of their destinies, random events happen, and the world might end in total chaos, why do we bother to learn, love, or live? Stoppards Arcadia is, more than any text I can think of, the universe in paper covers. As such, it inspired my first attempts at playwriting, and continues to challenge me as a writer and as a teacher of...

Great Books - Silent Spring by Rachel Carson; discussed by Dr Shelley Saguaro

Great Books - Silent Spring by Rachel Carson; discussed by Dr Shelley Saguaro

To celebrate World Book Day, Dr Shelley Saguaro, Head of Humanities and lecturer in English Literature at the University of Gloucestershire, has chosen Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (1962) as a great book which has had, and continues to have, a wide impact. Rachel Carson first serialised Silent Spring in The New Yorker magazine, where it began to generate a furore, not least because Carson was seen less as a scientist and more as a female literary figure (albeit with a scientific orientation) in books such as Under the Sea Wind; The Sea Around Us and The Edge of the Sea. In Silent Spring she dared to challenge the indiscriminate use of insecticides and other chemicals. Carson showed that by seeking immediate and drastic remedies to particular situations (or infestations) without thinking about the long-term consequences, the whole environment was poisoned and life threatened. Carsons bestselling book changed US policy despite the range of powerful vested interests, but in many ways...

Great Books - Dracula by Bram Stoker; discussed by Dr Hilary Weeks

Great Books - Dracula by Bram Stoker; discussed by Dr Hilary Weeks

To celebrate World Book Day, Dr Hilary Weeks, Course Leader for English Literature at the University of Gloucestershire, talks about Bram Stokers Dracula (1897) and its relation to British and Irish vampire and Gothic fiction. As theatre manager to the famous impresario Sir Henry Irving, Stoker knew how to write for dramatic and sensational effect, and Dracula belongs partly to the late Victorian flowering of lurid sensation literature. However, his novel glances back to earlier, Romantic versions of the monstrous individual, such as Mary Wollstonecraft Shelleys Frankenstein (1818); the Count is a terrifying, degenerate version of the monster who longed for love and human exchange, and he infects Victorian London with the virus of the Nosferatu or Undead, from a ruined tomb in a forgotten land. Stoker articulates contemporary fears of Eastern Europe, and of immigration, and the Count's search for lebensraum foreshadows Nazi ideology. Hilary notes the enduring appeal of the vampire...

Laurie Lee "Apples" Poem animation

Laurie Lee

Heres a virtual movie of the English poet and author Laurie Lee reading one of his best loved poem "Apples" Laurie Lee was born in Stroud, Gloucestershire, where the pattern of life had not changed in centuries. The families lived in overcrowded cottages, cooked on wood-fires and went to bed by candlelight. Lee was educated at the village school and at Stroud Central School. When he was fifteen he left and became an errand-boy. Lee also gave lectures on the violin. In his teens Lee had already begun to write poems. He had met two sisters who encouraged him in his writing aspirations. Both sisters were passionately involved with him. At the age of twenty Lee left for London, and worked for a year as a builder's labourer. He then spent four years travelling in Spain and the eastern Mediterranean. During these years he met a woman who took him under her wing and sent him to university to study art. According to many biographical sources, Lee fought in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) in...

John Drinkwater "The Vagabond" Poem animation

John Drinkwater

Heres a virtual movie of the celebrated English poet John Drinkwater reading his much loved poem "The Vagabond" about a happy go lucky itinerant person. Written around 1909 the poem has been turned to song almost from the time of its first publication and the sound recording used here was made in 1929. John Drinkwater (1 June 1882 - 25 March 1937) was an English poet and dramatist. He was born in Leytonstone, London, and worked as an insurance clerk. In the period immediately before the First World War, he was one of the group of poets associated with the Gloucestershire village of Dymock, along with Rupert Brooke and others. In 1918, he scored his first major success with his play, Abraham Lincoln. He followed it up with other plays in a similar vein, including Mary Stuart and Oliver Cromwell. Although he had been active with the Dymock poets, it was not until 1923 that he published his first collection of poetry. He progressed into literary criticism, and later became manager of...
