'HACKED' is a series of 8 rhythmic video sketches where I 'hack' to the pieces from my first album 'A Strange Year, Maybe' using a pair of sticks and a drumpad. Recently I have been inspired to further layer/expand these original pieces. Background: When I'm creating music I begin with an inspired emotion, find an instrument and begin to improvise that emotion. After I find a melody, a riff, or a sound I like, I begin a 'hack' in order to find the inner polyrhythms and then decide which instruments best express both the emotion and the rhythm. 'HACKED' is aa raw display of this process--finding these rhythms. It is filmed out of a studio apartment in Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico/February 2010. Note: Hacking is a term I learned while studying music in Kentucky at Calloway County High School. It is/was used as an expression for improvising a series of rudiments and not necessarily playing a prepared piece. Typically it is used as a pejorative. My intent is to show that it is merely the...
