We are back at Russel, IL to catch some Amtrak action on a grey March day. Our first train is the northbound Empire Builder, led by a trio of Genesis units running "elephant-style" , with the first two in the hedious Phase 5 paint scheme. Note the business cars on the end head, the varnish toward the rear, and the large number of express cars and roadrailers. The track conditions on the NS Griffin District have not improved over the last few months, causing even more 10mph slow orders between Griffin and Atlanta, GA. For priority roadrailer #246, this means running between 5-8mph for most of the distance!

Amtrak Lake Country Limited at Grayslake 2000
to carry a passenger car in the consist. Stops were made at Zenda and on the southeast side of Janesville, Wisconsin. The typical consist was a horizon coach and a baggage car, although an automated food service car was sometimes added. Roadrailers were sporadically found on the rear. Usual power was a GE B32-8, although the occasional Genesis or even F40PH would substitute. Operations were southbound in the early morning and northbound at night. Amtrak Train #4 on the BNSF Chillicothe Sub!!!!! 12.20.2009
Sub., Amtrak trains 3, 4, 5, and 6 were rerouted onto the BNSF Chillicothe Sub. Here Amtrak Southwest Chief 4 travels it's old route that was used until 1995. All this train needs is a couple of F40's, some phase III cars, mail cars, and roadrailers to make it really seem like 1995. I got here just in time because if I would have missed it had I gotten here five minutes later. Powering the train are AMTK P42DC 130 and AMTK P42DC 79.
