Everybody loves to use metallic finishes in their products these days, but these can be a huge pain to render due to the overly-long render times associated with reflections, particularly blurry reflections. Specular highlights can get you part of the way there, but they require the use of complex and processor-intensive lighting rigs. I prefer a different approach, using "incidence angle" based gradients. Here I describe the thinking behind the process, and a few ways in which it can be used....
