Pam talks to Shane Canon after this morning's plenary session on Cosmic Computing

Shane's talk was awesome. Here, I ask him about how he enjoyed presenting at LISA, a bit about the current and planned supercomputers at NERSC, and a few other things. Check out my tweets on #lisa09 for quotes from the session, too. ... LISA09 Shane Canon NERSC supercomputers space planetary neutrino dark energy

The NERCC is available with Servo motors. This option allows positive applied torque control through dial-in torque settings. The closed loop system gives feedback to the operator. Utilizing a programmable electronic cam (which can set up and store container and cap parameters) this option will send data to the controller memory. The values can be recalled via recipe selection from the HMI.

Planck Surveyor On Its Way to Orbit

Planck Surveyor On Its Way to Orbit

. Once in orbit beyond the moon, Planck will produce the most accurate measurements ever made of the relic radiation from the big bang, plus the largest set of CMB data ever recorded. Berkeley Labs long and continuing involvement with Planck began when George Smoot of the Physics Division proposed Plancks progenitor to ESA and continues with preparations for ongoing data analysis for the US Planck team at NERSC, led by Julian Borrill, co-leader of the Computational Cosmology Center ...

Opening Remarks and Activities within NERSC

Opening Remarks and Activities within NERSC

Dr. Horst Simon was named Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Computing Sciences at Berkeley Lab in 2004. In his role as the ALD for Computing Sciences, Horst represents the interests of the Lab's scientific computing divisions, NERSC and Computational Research, in the formulation of Laboratory policy, and leads the overall direction of the two divisions. He also coordinates constructive interactions within the computing sciences divisions to seek coupling with other scientific programs ...

Multicore: Fallout From a Computing Evolution

Multicore: Fallout From a Computing Evolution

used to be reserved for big science and engineering projects, but in two years that's all changed. Even laptops and hand-helds use parallel processors. Unfortunately, the software hasn't kept pace. Kathy Yelick, Director of the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center at Berkeley Lab, describes the resulting chaos and the computing community's efforts to develop exciting applications that take advantage of tens or hundreds of processors on a single chip. ...
