Lanin did little actual playing on these records; his main contributions were clean, well-orchestrated arrangements and session directions. the lyrics. It's possible that this was written about a woman, not the state. Carmichael and Gorrell didn't live in Georgia, but Carmichael did have a sister named Georgia. This was a #10 hit for a Jazz saxophone player named Frankie Trumbauer in 1931. Many artists have recorded it over the years, including Louis Armstrong, James Brown (a Georgia native), Django Reinhardt, and Willie Nelson. Charles' version is by far the most famous. Charles decided to record this after his driver ...

Frankie Trumbauer & His Orchestra With Bix - Margie (1927)

Frankie Trumbauer & His Orchestra With Bix - Margie (1927)

Frankie (Tram) Trumbauer (May 30,1901 - June 11,1956) was one of the leading jazz saxophonists of the 1920s and 1930s. He played C melody saxophone, which in size is between an alto and tenor saxophone. He also played alto. Trumbauer is, more than anything, remembered for being the musical companion of Bix Beiderbecke, a companionship that produced some of the finest and most innovative jazz records of the late 1920s. In 1927, Trumbauer released a recording of "Singin' the Blues" in 1927 ...

In the band were Bix Beiderbecke and Frank Trumbauer, who then went on to join Paul Whiteman. But as Trumbauer already had a recording contract with OKeh, these musicians made a couple of sessions for OKeh. Whose band it actually was is still unclear (at least to me!), but the two sides made on 30th September 1927, ...

Jean Goldkette Orchestra - I'm Gonna Meet my Sweetie Now

Goldkette actually had over 20 bands under his name by the mid-1920s, but it was his main unit (which recorded for Victor Records from 1924-29) that is the only one remembered today. In 1926 the band included Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Frankie Trumbauer, Eddie Lang, Joe Venuti and the legendary cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. Bix had a hard time with the Goldkette Orchestra. He was fired for his inability to read music and then re-hired after he learned enough music to get by. The orchestra was ...
