ETH Zurich IDSC - The Distributed Flight Array

A short video which introduces the Distributed Flight Array which is being developed at ETH Zurich. This multi-propeller platform consists of autonomous single-propeller modules that are able to drive, dock with their peers, and fly in a coordinated fashion. These modules are organized as distributed computational units with minimal sensory input. This is a complex system that is rich in dynamics with much room to explore various strategies of distributed estimation and control. Several ...

typically only see a handful of patients with influenza-like illness. Health care providers in the local community have also seen WSU students with influenza-like illness, but we have no way of knowing how many. "We also have no way of estimating how many students are self-caring at home without contacting us," school officials said. They also said they had been asked by the county health department "to track numbers in this way to give us a better idea of how many students at WSU ...

Least-Squares Estimation of an Ellipse

Least-Squares Estimation of an Ellipse

demonstrations.wolfram.com The Wolfram Demonstrations Project contains thousands of free interactive visualizations, with new entries added daily. Given the ellipse x^2/2 + y^2/4 = 1, a random sample of uniformly distributed abscissae in the interval ( - sqrt2 + 0.1, sqrt2 - 0.1) is generated. From these a set of ordinates is obtained by adding to each corresponding point on the ellipse a no... Contributed by: Tomas Garza

Estimating Conditional Expectations with Monte Carlo Simulation and Least Squares Regression

demonstrations.wolfram.com The Wolfram Demonstrations Project contains thousands of free interactive visualizations, with new entries added daily. In this Demonstration we consider three random variables, X and Y, which are uniformly distributed on the interval [0,1] and W = (a + b X + c Y)^3, where a, b, and c are (user-specified) non-negative integers. The purpose is to compute the conditional e... Contributed by: Andrzej Kozlowski

See full film here: www.booserver.com 11 September 2007 Sleep deprivation is rapidly becoming a fact of life. But with economists estimating that sleep disorders cost the economy over $9 bn a year, insomnia is no trivial matter. Then there's the human cost. Drowsiness is a factor in over 16% of fatal road accidents and 9% of work accidents. It's been linked to everything from obesity and heart disease to depression and diabetes. 'Eyes Wide Open' reports on the cost to society when we no ...

In this video, we see 100 data points distributed over 25 nodes. The data is modelled bij a Mixture of Gaussians with 5 mixtures (each represented by a colour). The ellipses show the current estimation of a node of the covariance for each cluster. We see that within a small communication steps the local estimates converge to the correct estimates. The parameters are initialised with a distributed implementation of the K-Means algorithm.

Superman II ( Trailer ) 1980

the film is surrounded with controversy since original director Richard Donner had completed, by his estimation, roughly 75% of the movie in 1977 before being taken off the project. Many of the scenes shot by second director Richard Lester (who had been an uncredited producer on the first film) in 1979 are refilmed Donner sequences. It was released in Europe and Australia in late 1980 but not distributed in the United States until June 1981. According to statements by Donner, roughly 25% of ...

The Balancing Cube, ETH Zurich

The Balancing Cube, ETH Zurich

Cube www.idsc.ethz.ch The Balancing Cube can balance on any of its edges or corners. It owes this ability to six mechanisms on each inner face that rotate in concert and achieve equilibrium for the overall system. Each of the mechanisms is an autonomous unit with sensors, a computer, a motor, and a battery on board. The six mechanism share information and coordinate themselves over a network of their computers. ... "Balancing Cube" "ETH Zurich" Controls "Distributed Control" "Distributed ...
