reformer, born into slavery in 1818. He fled from slavery to freedom in 1838, and became an outspoken activist for emancipation. Dubbed "The Sage of Anacostia" and "The Lion of Anacostia", he visited Britain on a number of occasions to promote the cause of abolition. As an enslaved African who successfully liberated himself, he became a key figure in the Abolitionist movement.
