One of the earliest forms of African-American narrative poetry began to appear in the 20th century. In the 1960s, Bruce Jackson went about collecting those poems, called "toasts," straight from the mouths of those who told them. He shares a few of them on today's show.
Meriweather is a Kentucky fiddle tune. No one is really sure where it came from, but I've read that Bruce Greene field recorded it in the 70's.
