Operational Excellence Interim Report

Operational Excellence Interim Report

Operational Excellence is a UC Berkeley effort to reduce costs and improve campus operations in order to ensure that as large a fraction as possible of our resources are directed to our core mission of teaching and research. The first phase of Operational Excellence is a fact-finding and assessment exercise that includes interviews and briefings with nearly 400 individuals, data gathering and analysis to document our current financial environment, and the preliminary development of options for achieving both financial sustainability and a new level of organizational performance. UCB Chancellor Robert Birgeneau and Vice Chancellor Frank Yeary present an interim report of the progress to date. berkeley.edu

UC Berkeley Protest

UC Berkeley Protest

On Thursday, Nov 19, 2009 UC Regents voted to raise tuition 32% at all CA public colleges. The following day, Friday Nov 20, 40 undergrad and grad Berkeley students occupied part of the 2nd floor in Wheeler Hall as an act of protest while roughly one thousand students surrounded the building for over 11 hours. Administration sent police from Alameda County, the UC and other areas to suppress the uprising. Meanwhile roughly 70 students at UC Santa Cruz were engaged in an occupation as did students at UCLA the day prior, UC Davis and other schools as well. Here you will see excessive police presence and force as well as excessive spirit, purpose, courage and community on behalf of the students. Ultimately the 40 occupiers did not get their demands met and were charged misdemeanors. 3 activists were arrested and charged felonies before securing themselves inside w their peers that morning. Opening Remarks and Research Presentation

13th Annual Travers Conference on Ethics and Accountability Opening Remarks by Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau. Research Presentation: California in the People's Court by Professor Jack Citrin, Director, Institute of Governmental Studies, University of California, Berkeley. Using polling data and other indices of voter satisfaction with government, this paper examines the history of Californians views about the performance of state government. How has the level of satisfaction or dissatisfaction changed through the years? Does it relate closely to other events, such as the passage of crucial ballot measures? What does it tell us about the underlying causes of the dysfunction in the California political system? polisci.berkeley.edu
