After the immense popularity of their LP "Autoamerican" and the #1 hits "Rapture" and "The Tide Is High", the pressure was on to carry the momentum. While the band was taking a short break from recording, Frank Infante sued the band over "Autoamerican" as he apparently was not included in the creative process. It was settled out of court and he remained in the band. During this time Debbie stepped into the studio for her first solo effort "Koo Koo". I heard "Backfired" on the radio and ran out to get the LP. I was so taken by the cover art, her lovely face pierced with four long skewers was alternately mesmerizing and horrifying, strangely beautiful. This is the 12" release timing out at 6:19.

"The Tide Is High" was covered by US New Wave band Blondie in 1980, in a reggae/ska style that included horns and strings. It was released as a single, and appeared on the band's fifth album, Autoamerican. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and was popular outside the USA, reaching number one on the UK singles chart, number four in Australia, and number fifteen in the former West Germany. It was the last UK number one single for the band until "Maria" in 1999.
