The Walking Englishman: Arkengarthdale Walk, Part 7 - Market Day in Reeth

To complete my lovely walk I arrived back in Reeth to the pleasant hustle and bustle of the villages Market. This market is vital to the ongoing community spirit in this remote dales village; the central village of lovely Swaledale. As I changed to drive home I observed the quiet stirrings of the market traders and their valued customers. It captured my time adequately and gave a completeness to my wonderful day out. The Walking Englishman: Arkengarthdale Walk, Part 6 - River Swale near Reeth

The River Swale between Gunnerside and Reeth is constantly changing. Erosion of one bank and deposits on another are straightening out some of the corners and even at this point near Hutton Garth you can see the fields on the far side are being undermined and collapsing into the water. further upstream towards Gunnerside the bankside erosion in more evident with a few mature trees which were once riverbank are noe tumbled into the water. An ever changing scene. Read about the walk and find a map and statistics at www.walkingenglishman.com

The Walking Englishman: Arkengarthdale Walk, Part 5 - Two Lapwings now

The Walking Englishman: Arkengarthdale Walk, Part 4 - Lapwing on Reeth Low Moor

After walking to the village of Langthwaite I had lunch beside the Arkle Beck. At the same time I copped my second and final shower of the day so lunch was quickly taken before starting my inbound part of the walk from Langthwaite to Reeth. I headed south on the main road out of town and through the tiny hamlet of Arkle town before leaving the road at Raw Bank House and heading across Reeth Low Moor. On my lonely moor crossing my only neighbours were Lapwings. Although I stuck to the path it was still deemed too close to nesting sites for I was frequently encouraged to leave the path and follow Lapwings leading me away from nesting sites. I did my best while keeping my relative course. No one was too discomforted, neither Lapwing nor me. Read about the walk and find a map and statistics at www.walkingenglishman.com

The Walking Englishman: Arkengarthdale Walk, Part 3 - Langthwaite

After the peace of quiet of Slei Gill I made my way through the hamlet of Booze which is really a random scattering of dwellings, some houses and some farms. As I walked through Booze the rain came down quite heavily and for some time i sheltered under a tree. Soon the rain had passed though and I made my way along the road connecting Booze (which is a dead end place, the road terminating in Booze) to Langthwaite, Arkengarthdales premier village. This film is taken from Scotty Hill just above the village and by sheer fortune the sun came out as I got to this spot. The piercing sun unveiled all the splendour of Langthwaite, a community set in a beautiful place. Do you see what I mean? The Walking Englishman: Arkengarthdale Walk, Part 2 - Slei Gill

After the expansive views of the Yorkshire Dales countryside from Fremlington Edge Top I made my way off the fell top by carefully descending into Slei Gill. There was lots of evidence of lead mining all around with old adits, slags heaps and redundant buildings; a sadness of exploitation to such a beautiful place but the beauty is still shining through as evident in this film clip. The Walking Englishman: Arkengarthdale Walk, Part 1 - Sunshine and Rain

I did this walk in Arkengarthdale on a Spring day in 2009. Spring is my favourite time for walking as i'm always itching for a lovely walk in the countryside which is bursting into life after the darkness of winter. On this walk I set off from Reeth and after an early detour because of a ford crossing no longer being there (grid reference SE03948 99672 - see below) I accessed Fremlington Edge Top by Reeth Bridge and Cuckoo Hill. I made this movie clip after walking a short distance on Fremlington Edge Top. I felt on top of the world. Read about the walk and find a map and statistics at www.walkingenglishman.com
