Ashland VA 11.08.09: Closing Time

Just after 8, we finally got some encouraging news - the AAPRCO train was spotted in Petersburg and would be pausing for a crew change in Richmond. Still, it wasn't until shortly after 9pm when one of the other railfans' scanners came alive with the magic words that grabbed our attention - 'P956, clear at Elmont'. One more call after that for the signals at Ashcake Road, and a northbound headlight popped into view. Finally, at 9:06 the long-awaited train rolled past our vantage point and on ...

Ashland VA 11.08.09: The Lid's Off

Still no sign of the AAPRCO train, but the latest word was that it was clear of the mess in NC and was now making a run for it. Ashland VA 11.08.09: Northbound Palmetto

It was now officially a test of will to stay put and see just when the AAPRCO special would show up. You know you're out late when you are looking for a light source so you can see the bubble level on your tripod... The headlight of the approaching northbound Palmetto silhouetted a couple of the other stalwart railfans as we awaited the special. The time was 5:43 and the night was still plenty young.

Ashland VA 11.08.09: Northbound Manifest

Any remaining hope of seeing the northbound AAPRCO special in daylight faded along with the sunset when this northbound manifest passed through town, pulled by a pair of ES44DCs treading lightly past the Myrtle Street gates. Word from one of the other railfans present was that the special had been stuck somewhere south of Rocky Mount, NC behind a freight that struck a car at a crossing. Ugh.

Ashland VA 11.08.09: Fender Flames

Hope was fading as rapidly as the light for any chance of seeing the AAPRCO special on the evening of the 8th, but the regular trains put on a good show as consolation. Much horn saluting ensued as P42s 58 and 120 led the southbound Auto Train past the small crowd at the Ashland station at 5:21. The streetlights created a nice flame effect on the sides of the cars as the train rolled on towards Florida.
