STRAUSS II - SOUVENIR POLKA OPUS 162

The Carnival Season of 1855 was a rather subdued affair - the previous months had left 6000 dead from a cholera outbreak in Vienna. For a charity ball in aid of the poor, Johann wrote this Souvenir Polka performed in Karl Schwender's recently opened 'Neue Welt entertainment establishment on 23rd January 1855.

STRAUSS II - AURORA POLKA OPUS 165

For the Viennese Artists association Johann wrote this pleasing little polka for their annual ball on 14th February 1855 at the Sperl. The title is taken from the motto of the association 'Aurora musis amica' - 'Dawn is a friend to the Muses'

Baltimore Inner Harbor Light House

Baltimore's Inner Harbor is one of the most photographed and visited areas of the city. It has been one of the major seaports in the United States since the 1700s. Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse located here was originally built in 1855. During 133 years of manned operation, Keepers lived with their families at the station. They kept livestock on the bottom platform of the light, grew vegetables on the walk surrounding the lighthouse, and would trade fish for fresh produce with the local farmers ...

STRAUSS II - NACHTVEILCHEN POLKA MAZUR OPUS 170

The polka mazur 'Dame's Violet' had its first performance at Unger's Casino in Hernals on 1st July 1855 and is named purely on the basis that the Strausses liked to name many of their pieces based on the natural world. It is not known how well recieved the piece was, but as it is never heard these days, it can be safely assumed that it dropped out of the Strauss Orchestra repertoire fairly quickly.
