X-Men Origins: Wolverine An origins story that follows the early life of James Howlett (Jackman), also known as Logan, and best known as Wolverine. The chronicle of his younger years as a mutant connects to his relationship and eventual falling out with Victor Creed/Sabretooth (Schreiber), and his fateful entry into the Weapons X project, the governmental program that turns willing and unwilling beings into living weapons.

Media-friendly producer Lauren Shuler Donner was the first person to promise a bleak look into James Howlett’s backstory (call it Dark Knight effect), but when that didn’t gel with initial reports that Fox wants/wanted a more PG-13 take on their first X-Men spin-off, it seemed like everyone involved with the production stepped up to let fans know everything was (mostly) copacetic on set and in the editing suite. Latest reports indicate director Gavin Hood is “90% pleased” with the final results. And what about the rumors of Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool project being in development? I doubt it’s an overstatement, and Reynold’s definitely pushing for it.

Director: Gavin Hood
Stars: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds
Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation
Release Date: 1 May 2009 (USA)

The Informers A multi-strand narrative set in early 1980’s Los Angeles, centered on an array of characters who represent both the top of the heap (a Hollywood dream merchant, a dissolute rock star, an aging newscaster) and the bottom (a voyeuristic doorman, an amoral ex-con). Connecting the intertwining strands are a group of beautiful, blonde young men and women who sleep all day and party all night, doing drugs — and one another –with abandon, never realizing that they are dancing on the edge of a volcano.

The rage for all things 1980s ends here, since Gregor Jordan’s adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel was all but disowned by the Sundance set after its premiere back in January. The idea of a nearly always nude Amber Heard should not conjure up notions of it’s-so-bad-it’s-Showgirls-good here. Seriously, just move away and move on from this one.

Rated R for strong sexual content, nudity, drug use, pervasive language and some disturbing images.

Director: Gregor Jordan
Stars: Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger, Mickey Rourke
Studio: Senator Distribution
Release Date: 1 May 2009 (Iceland)
Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller

Obsessed A successful asset manager, who has just received a huge promotion, is blissfully happy in his career and in his marriage. But a temp worker starts stalking him, all the things he’s worked so hard for are placed in jeopardy.

What’s this, a Beyonce movie that isn’t a musical biopic? She sings in it, though, right? No? Not even a duet with Ali Larter? Would “Fatal Attraction: The Musical” have been too much to ask for here? It’s like a serious Attraction remake, but with Anne Archer as the lead character. Also, we are dying to see if B. kills A. with her thighs.

Rated PG-13 for sexual material including some suggestive dialogue, some violence and thematic content.

Director: Steve Shill
Stars: Beyoncé Knowles, Idris Elba, Ali Larter
Studio: Screen Gems
Release Date: 24 April 2009 (USA)
Genre: Drama, Thriller

State of Play - Movie Review and Synopsis

State of Play A petty thief is gunned down in an alley and a Congressman’s assistant falls in front of a subway – two seemingly unrelated deaths. But not to wisecracking, brash newspaper reporter Cal McAffrey who spies a conspiracy waiting to be uncovered. With a turbulent past connected to the Congressman and the aid of ambitious young rookie writer Della Frye, Cal begins uprooting clues that lead him to a corporate cover-up full of insiders, informants, and assassins. But as he draws closer to the truth, the relentless journalist must decide if it’s worth risking his life and selling his soul to get the ultimate story.

You couldn’t ask for a better cast for this thriller: Affleck is spot-on, Crowe finally gets to flex his acting muscle without mugging (in a role that was considered for Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp and Tom Hanks), McAdams finally gets to act period, and Mirren is every reporter’s worst nightmare boss. The original 2003 BBC miniseries was fantastic television (once you could understand everyone’s accents) and if they don’t mess it up, this could be stellar, especially once you add in director Kevin Mcdonald (The Last King of Scotland). Our only question: why the April release? This could be a perfect adult option for the sequel-friendly days of summer.

Rated PG-13 for some violence, language including sexual references, and brief drug content.

Director: Kevin Macdonald
Stars: Russell Crowe, Rachel McAdams, Ben Affleck
Studio: Universal Pictures
Release Date: 17 April 2009 (USA)
Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller

Dragonball Evolution - Movie Review and Synopsis

Dragonball Evolution Upon discovering he was sent to Earth to carrying out a sinister plan, a humanoid alien named Goku (Chatwin) looks to fulfill his dying grandfather’s wish: Prevent the evil Piccolo (Marsters) and his alien forces from collecting seven mystical artifacts which would allow him to take over our planet. In order to fend off the attackers, Goku must find Master Roshi (Chow), who is the one person who can set him on the right path.

Speed Racer’ misfortunes have not stopped Hollywood from aggressively pursuing anime/manga titles to turn into feature films; Dragonball is only the first in a series of movies, which includes Ninja Scroll, The Last Airbender, and Akira (James Cameron has plans for Battle Angel Alita, too). Genre fans wrinkled their noses at just about every Dragonball announcement, save the casting of Yun-Fat Chow as Master Roshi and James “Spike” Marsters as Lord Piccolo, but the any publicity is good publicity cliché applies here, since anime purists have dissected everything from a leaked trailer to a 16-second clip that aired on Japanese TV in an attempt to get a definitive look at the direction in which Final Destination creator James Wong is taking the story. Many indicators tell me that movie fans at large won’t be pulling a Watchmen here and running out to the comic-book shop in order to brush up on this story.

Rated PG for intense sequences of action/violence and brief mild language.

Director: James Wong

Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation
Release Date: 25 March 2009 (Indonesia), 10 April 2009 (USA)
