Mutant Chronicles At the end of the Ice Age, The Machine came from the outer space with the purpose to change men into mutants. However, a hero defeated the device and a great seal was laid over The Machine. In 2707, the depleted world is ruled by four Corporations: Mishima, Bauhaus, Capitol and Imperial that are in constant war. During a battle between Capitol and Bauhaus, the great seal is broken and The Machine works again transforming soldiers and civilians in hordes of mutants. A small part of the population escapes to Mars, leaving millions of people behind. The man of faith and leader of an ancient brotherhood Brother Samuel is a believer of God and the Chronicles, a bible about the mutants. With the city under siege of the mutants, he visits the Corporations’ leader Constantine asking for an aircraft and twenty men for a suicide mission to destroy The Machine, planting a bomb and a detonator following the knowledge of the Chronicles. He recruits the tough Major ‘Mitch’ Hunter; the Bauhaus Lieutenant Maximillian von Steiner; the keeper of the Chronicles Severian that is under a vow of silence; the gorgeous and lethal Corporal Valerie Duval; Corporal Juba Kim Wu; Captain John McGuire; and Corporal Jesus ‘El Jesus’ de Barrera. Together they become the last hope of Earth against the evil mutants.

Maybe all the people who hated the Mutant Chronicles cut which screened at Comic-Con and elsewhere last year will regroup for version two; Magnolia Pictures provided director Simon Hunter with the resources to tinker with his film for this limited release (note that the VOD premiere occurs/occurred one month prior to the theatrical bow). Will this engage the critics? No way, but perhaps more fans will get behind the revamped picture, and allow this entire universe to live on either in DVD sequels, webisodes, what have you. It’s the kind of prospect that serves as a custom fit for the industry-savvy Thomas Jane, who perhaps should create his own distribution company?

Rated R for strong bloody violence and language throughout.

Director: Simon Hunter
Stars: Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, Devon Aoki

Dragonball Evolution Upon discovering he was sent to Earth to carrying out a sinister plan, a humanoid alien named Goku (Chatwin) looks to fulfill his dying grandfather’s wish: Prevent the evil Piccolo (Marsters) and his alien forces from collecting seven mystical artifacts which would allow him to take over our planet. In order to fend off the attackers, Goku must find Master Roshi (Chow), who is the one person who can set him on the right path.

Speed Racer’ misfortunes have not stopped Hollywood from aggressively pursuing anime/manga titles to turn into feature films; Dragonball is only the first in a series of movies, which includes Ninja Scroll, The Last Airbender, and Akira (James Cameron has plans for Battle Angel Alita, too). Genre fans wrinkled their noses at just about every Dragonball announcement, save the casting of Yun-Fat Chow as Master Roshi and James “Spike” Marsters as Lord Piccolo, but the any publicity is good publicity cliché applies here, since anime purists have dissected everything from a leaked trailer to a 16-second clip that aired on Japanese TV in an attempt to get a definitive look at the direction in which Final Destination creator James Wong is taking the story. Many indicators tell me that movie fans at large won’t be pulling a Watchmen here and running out to the comic-book shop in order to brush up on this story.

Rated PG for intense sequences of action/violence and brief mild language.

Director: James Wong
Stars: Justin Chatwin, James Marsters, Yun-Fat Chow
Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation
Release Date: 25 March 2009 (Indonesia), 10 April 2009 (USA)

Alien Trespass It was a summer night in 1957 in the quiet California desert town of Mojave. Local astronomer Ted Lewis (Eric McCormack) is making a special anniversary dinner for his wife Lana (Jody Thompson). A local diner waitress, Tammy (Jenni Baird) is in her trailer painting a horse scene while Dick (Andrew Dunbar) and Penny (Sarah Smyth) are necking at lovers lane. All are watching the light show from the annual August Perseid meteor showers when suddenly there is a blinding light and crash into the butte just outside of town. Ted attempts to investigate but Lana prevails in keeping him home at least until she falls asleep and he can sneak out to the crash site. In the meantime we see a gruesome alien creature (The Ghota) leaving the spaceship to slip away into the night. Soon after, a tall alien in a silvery metallic suit (Urp) appears from the ship. When Ted arrives at the butte he does not discover a smoking red-hot meteorite but rather a flying saucer imbedded in the hillside with its ramp down. He cautiously enters the saucer and is snatched up by the mysterious silver alien.

Townspeople soon start disappearing everywhere and the only remnant at the scene is a puddle of gurgling mud. Ted Lewis, having been body snatched by Urp, is now on the trail of the murderous Ghota. Urp, is actually a galactic Federal Marshal from another planet who was transporting the Ghota when his saucer crashed landed and the Ghota escaped. He needs to find and recapture the creature before it begins to divide or it will multiply exponentially until all life is consumed on planet Earth. After unsuccessfully trying to convince Lana to help him find the Ghota, Urp meets Tammy on the highway when she offers him a lift. Urp tries his best to convince Tammy of his plight and to help him track down the Ghota. But when they stop at an old derelicts cabin and find only a mud puddle of human remains, Tammy can take no more of the crazy talk and circumstances and leaves him in a huff.

The teens, Dick & Penny, are on their own track encountering first the Ghota and then the saucer, trying to convince anyone to believe them. Finally they tell their story in the diner to Tammy who now realizes that Urp was telling her the truth. She tries to convey this to the temporary police chief (Dan Lauria) who still refuses to believe there is any real threat, much less from outer space. That is until later when his senior deputy (Robert Patrick) is also dissolved by the Ghota.

The Ghota is now rampaging through the town dissolving people, cops (and even children) at will. Tammy encounters the Ghota herself while she is closing the diner and makes a narrow escape. Then comes the big scene in the local movie theater where Dick, Penny and Cody (Aaron Brooks) are watching the original 1950s version of The Blob. The Ghota appears at the rear of the theater and begins picking off its prey. All the patrons flee the theater except the teens who are trapped and now stalked by the Ghota. All seems hopeless until Tammy arrives and tries to help, only to become trapped herself with the teens when the Ghotas divided twin suddenly materializes.

Super Capers - Movie Review and Synopsis

Super Capers A good guy with no powers joins a superhero team with no clue against a bad guy with no shame. Would-be superhero, Ed Gruberman, who possesses no super powers must join a team of misfit heroes-in-training known as The Super Capers. Having only faith, Gruberman must travel through time to uncover an evil plot involving some gold bullion, a fiery femme fatale, and a criminal mastermind with a dark secret about Ed’s past.

No, Project Greenlight did not fund a feature-film version of “Who Wants to Be a Superhero?” This satire wears a badge of earnestness and good humor on its chest, and it looks like it could become a hero to the fan-film set. And take a look at the supporting cast here — surprisingly good, eh? That’s about as positive as I can be here.

Rated PG for mild language, some rude humor and brief smoking.

Director: Ray Griggs
Stars: Justin Whalin, Ray Griggs, Danielle Harris

Race to Witch Mountain - Movie Review and Synopsis

Race to Witch Mountain When a cab driver (Johnson) picks up an unusual fare — a brother and sister duo with paranormal powers, who are being pursued by a nefarious organization — he teams up with a discredited astrophysicist (Gugino) to protect the kids and, ultimately, the rest of humankind.

Original Witch Mountain stars Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann are on board for Disney’s redo of enduring and still-kinda-scary 1975 family movie, but how far will Disney in their attempt to preserve the story’s integrity? Rather far, it seems, if the footage we saw at Comic-Con is any indication. Director Andy Fickman is looking to make his first break from his more-cushy films (She’s the Man, The Game Plan) by picking up the mythology 30 years after the first film was set. Will it be PG or PG-13, people are asking, but when you have AnnaSophia Robb aboard, co-star of the “Hard PG” Bridge to Terabithia, I think Fickman and Disney are up to something special here.

Rated PG for sequences of action and violence, frightening and dangerous situations, and some thematic elements.

Director: Andy Fickman
Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, AnnaSophia Robb
Studio: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Release Date: 13 March 2009 (USA)
